The Short Narrative Genres and Classic Korean Novels, Beyond the Dichotomy

‘신화의 시대’, ‘전설의 시대’, ‘소설의 시대’라고 시대를 구획하고 그 역사적 전개를 설명하는 것은 문학사의 지배적 경향을 지칭해준다는 점에서 의의를 가지지만, 한 시대에서 다음 시대로 전환되는 식으로만 설명하는 것은 무리가 있다. 전이 전으로 존재하는 시대, 전에서 소설로 이동한 경향이 더 강한 시대, 전이 소설화된 시대 등을 단선적으로 구획하기도 어렵다. 여러 단형서사 장르는 매 시기 다양한 사람들의 서사욕망에 부응하여 존재했다. 형성과정, 세계관, 진실성에 대한 신뢰 등의 결합 양상을 통해 보았듯, 각 시대의 향유층은 다양한 서사 형식들을 요구해왔다. 여러 단형서사 장르들은 그에 잘 부응하여 제 노릇을 다해왔다. 소설도 그 중 하나로 인정될 만하고, 어떤 시기에는 지배적 역할을 했다고 인정한다. 그러나 다른 단형서사 장르들이 소설의 출현으로 제 노릇을 끝냈거나 시효를 다한 것은 아니다. 서사적으로 길고 복잡한 것에 대한 집착이 짧고 단순한 것에 대한 학문적 폭력을 불러온 것은 아닌가 반성이 필요하다. 신화, 전설, 민담, 전, 일화, 필기, 패설 등에 대한 연구의 집적은 단형서사 장르들 고유의 존재 양상을 독자적으로 살필 수 있을 단계에 이르게 했다. 잡록집이나 야담집에 실린 작품들이 다양한 장르적 속성을 지니며 아직도 그 체계를 온전하게 설명할 수 있는 틀이 마련되지 않았기에 단형서사 장르론은 계속되어야 한다. 그것들을 더욱 세밀하게 규정하고 설명할 할 수 있도록 하위 유형을 나누는 일도 수행해야 할 것이다. 우리 서사문학사에 고유한 질서와 원리를 부여함으로써 보편적 장르 이론으로 나아갈 길을 모색한다는 의의도 가진다. 그런 독자적 존재를 인정한 뒤 그것들과 소설의 관계를 따져보아야 한다.

Dividing the historical development of literature into 'the age of myth,' 'the age of legend,' 'the age of novel' is a meaningful way of foregrounding the dominant literary tendency of the time. However, Explaining the literary development as turning from one era to another ensues quite a significant logical gap. It is hard to make a linear classification among the age that biography existed as biography itself, the age that biography showed a strong impetus to become novel, the age that biography developed into novel. Several short narrative genres has reflected various groups' desire for story. Novel deserves to be recognized as one of them and has played the central role at a certain era. The emergence of novel does not necessarily lead to the termination of the short narrative genres. Accumulation of research on myth, legend, folktale, biography, anecdote, Pilgi(筆記), and Paeseol(稗說) helps understand unique characteristics of individual short narrative genres. In order to make more detailed classification and explanation, it is imperative to continue studying and dividing into the sub genres of the short narratives. Establishing the distinct order and principle of the narrative literature is a preceding step toward finding a universal genre theory. Exploring the relationship between novel and the short narrative genres would lead to a meaningful result only after the acknowledgment of each short narrative as an individual genre.
