‘도’에는 하늘의 도인 ‘천도’와 사람의 도인 ‘인도’ 두 가지가 있다. 그리고 노자는 『도덕경』에서 ‘천도’를 종종 커다란 도라는 뜻의 ‘大道(대도)’라고 바꿔서 지칭하기도 한다. 성인은 바로 커다란 도 즉 하늘의 도인 ‘천도’로 대동 사회를 다스린 지도자이다. 좀 더 구체적으로 말해서, 성인은 대동 사회를 이끈 삼황오제를 지칭한다. 이와 달리 군자란 하나라와 상나라 그리고 주나라 삼대의 뛰어난 여섯 명의 지도자를 뜻한다. 성인과 군자는 모두가 도를 따라서 오로지 나라와 백성만을 생각한 뛰어난 지도자라는 공통점이 있다. 그런데 삼황오제 중 하나인 복희씨와 여와씨는 인류를 창조한 후 곧바로 도로 세상을 다스렸으므로, 대동을 이끈 지도자인 성인은 누구에게서 도를 배운 것이 아니라, 스스로 깨달았던 존재이다. 하지만 군자는 성인과 달리 후천적인 학습을 통해서 성인의 도를 배우고 실천하려고 노력한 인물들이다. 게다가 아랫자리에서 백성을 섬기는 성인과 달리, 군자는 윗자리에서 명령함으로써 통제했다. 『도덕경』에는 ‘성인’이 31차례 등장하는 반면, ‘군자’는 단지 2차례만 나온다. 반면에 『논어』에는 군자가 107차례 나오는 반면 성인은 4차례 등장한다. 따라서 이러한 단순 통계를 통해서도, 『도덕경』은 대동 사회 지도자 성인의 도리를 피력한 반면, 『논어』는 소강 사회 지도자 군자의 도리를 설명한 서적임을 이해할 수 있다.
There are two types of the Dao(the path), one is the Dao of sky, the other is the Dao of people. Laozi often refers to the Dao of sky as a grand Dao which means a the great path. The saints are a leader who ruled the Datong society(the society of great unity) with the Dao of sky. To be more specific, the saints refers to the three emperors and five kings who led the Datong society. On the other hand, the gentlemen stands for the six outstanding leaders of the Xia, the Shang and the Zhou Dynasty. The saints and the gentlemen have something in common: they were all outstanding leaders who follow the Dao and only thought of their country and people. But Fuxi and Nüwa, two of the three emperors and five kings ruled the world with the Dao after the creation of mankind, so the saints did not learn from anyone, but realized for himself. Unlike The saints, however, the gentlemen were those who have tried to practice the Dao of The saints through learning. In addition, unlike the saints serving the people at the bottom, the gentlemen controlled by ordering them at the top. While the saints are appeared 31 times in the Daodejing, the gentlemen are appeared only twice. On the other hand, there are the gentlemen 107 times in the Analects, while the saints appear four times. Thus, even with these simple statistics, we can understand that while the Daodejing is a book that describes the Datong Social Leader the saints, the Analects is a book that describes the Xiaokang(well-off society) Social Leader the gentlemen.
