본 연구는 아마추어 예술가가 수동적인 예술소비자에서 벗어나 예술생산자로서 예술 장에 진입하고 있는 현상에 주목하여, 예술 장의 기존 구성원인 프로페셔널 예술가와 새로운 구성원인 아마추어 예술가 간에 예술 및 예술가라는 상징자본을 둘러싸고 어떠한 상징 투쟁이 벌어지고 있는지 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 아마추어 예술가 15명, 프로페셔널 예술가 11명과 개인 인터뷰를 시도하였다. 인터뷰 분석 결과 연구에 참여한 프로페셔널 예술가들은 ‘업’, ‘전문성’, ‘제도화되고 체화된 문화자본’ 등의 상징을 강조하며 아마추어 예술가를 예술 시장의 활성화에 기여하는 예술소비자로서만 인식하고 있었다. 반면, 아마추어 예술가는 프로페셔널 예술가의 도움을 받아 예술을 학습하고 모방하면서 예술 장에 들어서지만, 최종적인 예술적 성취만을 중요시하는 프로페셔널 예술가와 달리 예술실천의 과정 그 자체에서 열정과 즐거움을 느끼며 스스로를 예술생산자로 여기고 있었다. 또한 경제적 문제에서 자유로운 점과 전문가적인 평가나 다른 사람의 시선에서 벗어나 다양한 예술적 도전을 할 수 있다는 점에서 오히려 프로페셔널 예술가에 비해 예술적 자율성을 갖고 있다고까지 주장했다. 이러한 대립적 관점은 예술 장에서 예술 및 예술가라는 상징권력을 둘러싸고 아마추어 예술가가 프로페셔널 예술가의 독점적 지위에 도전해가는 양상으로 볼 수 있다. 이를 통해 아마추어 예술가는 스스로 예술 장을 구성하는 독립되고 주체적인 예술가의 위치를 차지하기 위해 노력해가고 있는 것을 알 수 있다.
Noting that amateur artists are moving away from passive art consumers and entering the art scene as art producers, this study aims to investigate aspects of symbolic struggle in the field of art between professional and amateur artists. To this end, individual interviews were conducted. 15 amateur artists and 11 professional artists were asked about how professional artists, who already has symbolic power in the field of art, look at the appearance of an amateur artists, what strategies each actor uses to maintain or acquire symbolic power in the field of art, and what they think about art and artists. According to the interview text analysis, professional artists who participated in the research emphasized ‘fate’, ‘fortune’, ‘karma’ as becoming professional artists, ‘talent’, ‘prize’, ‘verification’ as their artistic expertise, and institutionalized and embodied cultural capital as their symbolic authority. And they were recognizing amateur artists as consumers contributing to the revitalization of the art market. On the other hand, the amateur artist was experiencing passion and enjoyment in the process of learning and imitating art with the help of a professional artist. It also argued that it has artistic autonomy over professional artists in that it is free from economic issues and can take various artistic challenges away from the eyes of others. And amateur artists also recognized themselves as independent “artists” as an important player in the field of art.
