The implication of mathematical elements in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

『이상한 나라의 앨리스』에는 수학적 요소들이 배열되어 있다. 문학작품 속에서 수학에 대한 언급들은 지속적으로 있었지만 그것들은 수학적 지식으로 문학작품 속에 등장하는 인물과 사건을 분석하는 관계는 아니었다. 수학은 고대부터 자연에 대한 두려움을 극복하고 인간에게 삶과 문명의 이치를 설명하기 위한 지식으로 사용되었다. 특히 철학자들은 자연의 절대적인 원리를 이해하고 사람들에게 그것에 대한 토대를 제공하기 위해 수학을 연구했다. 우리가 『이상한 나라의 앨리스』에 수학적 요소들이 들어있다고 인식하는 것은 삶과 문명에 관계된 수학의 문제가 아니라 수학적 사유의 문제가 관계될 때였다. 수학적 요소에는 우리에게 전혀 다른 세상에 살고 있는 대상에 대한 감각과 존재하지 않는 대상이 존재하도록 의미를 생성하는 사유의 힘이 들어있다. 물리학과 형이상학에서 미지의 혹은 아직 연구되지 않은 복잡한 세상의 원리를 설명하기 위해 사용된 수학적 요소를 도입하면 우리는 『이상한 나라의 앨리스』가 어린이를 대상으로 한 동화의 이야기가 아니라 수학적인 지식이 있어야 해결되는 사건들과 등장인물들을 만난다. 이러한 논리를 끌어들일 수 있는 원인은 수학의 허수처럼 존재하지 않는 것을 자연스럽게 사유하는 문학적 상상력뿐만 아니라 수학의 원초적인 논리와 지식이 『이상한 나라의 앨리스』에 존재하기 때문이다. 수학에는 비경계적이고 비인간적인 존재를 언급하는 언어는 없지만 수학적 요소는 그곳을 탐험하는 도구로 사용된다. 그래서 수학은 우리에게 사유할 수 있는 것이 무엇인지를 요구하고 그러한 것들이 어디에서 발생되는지를 나열하고 정리하게 만든다. 이 논문에서는 작품 속에 들어 있는 수학의 원리가 적용된 지점을 재발견하는 것이 아니라 수학의 지식에 의해 문학 속의 이질적인 문제가 사유될 수 있다는 것과 작품에서 나오는 수학적 숫자(앨리스가 커졌다 작아졌다하는)가 어떻게 인문학적 상상력을 무한대로 확장하는지를 사유하게 만드는 것이 목적이다.

This paper aims to make a mathematical approach to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in which there exist many mathematical elements. While reading Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, we find that her body is changed into grown big and shrunken small. In the Wonderland, the numerical concept insinuates these changes look differently and this fact is that the correction of calculation does not seem to be important in the fictional places. Due to her paradoxical, ironical, and incorrect calculation, the message she intends to deliver looks like to be communicated only to the readers of fairy tales or fantasy. This kind of nonsensical and nonconceptual situation in nowhere place can be consistently found all throughout her changes. But it seems to tell us that this wonderland is full of possibilities just to generate mathematical expression with number. Interestingly, however, the author’s fictional attempts could be said to be disparate and extraneous pleasures in terms of numerical arrangements and geometric phases when there Alice got ‘down’ three times into the hare hall. On the contrary, mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson as the real author logically expressed his knowledge based on mathematical symbols so that we could tell the events in the wonderland were possible in fraction and differentiation of her movement and metamorphosis. In this case it is not exaggeration to say that the words and languages are no other than productive nonsense and that the mathematical logics employed here looks them paradoxical because all situations play a vital role to create significant meanings. Therefore, we can see that the nonsensical logic equates the materials of mathematics and that the paradoxical events become the elements of mathematical expression to make literary implication.
