본 연구는 Dewey의 이론을 기반으로 한 유아교육 목적으로서의 ‘민주시민의 기초형성’이현장에서 어떻게 이루어지고 있는지를 살펴 유아교육의 나아갈 방향성에 대한 기초자료를 제공하기 위함이다. 이를 위해 2017년 3월부터 2017년 10월까지 만 5세 유아 23명과 1명의 교사를 공동체의 구성원으로 보고 그들의 일상생활 상호작용의 특징을 통해 구성되어가는 민주시민의 의미를 찾는 연구를 수행하였다. 결과를 살펴보면, 첫째, 뿌리반에서 나타난 상호작용의특징으로 ‘규범을 공유하는 상호작용’, ‘관계를 지향하는 상호작용’이었다. ‘규범을 공유하는 상호작용’의 하위는 ‘전달과 재현하는 상호작용’과 ‘경계를 넘나드는 상호작용’으로 나타났다. 둘째, 이를 통해 구성되는 민주시민의 의미는 ‘삶 속에서 주도적으로 재현하는 민주시민’과 ‘삶속에서 창조적 지성이 요구되는 민주시민’으로 나타났다. Dewey는 민주시민이란 공공의 관심사를 상호작용을 통해 협의하고 더 좋은 결과를 만들어 가는 존재라 하였다. 일방적으로 전달하거나 전달된 것에 대해 순응하는 사회 일원의 모습을 넘어, 공동체 속에서 타인을 이해하고존중하며, 공유하고 토론하며, 공공의 선을 이루려고 노력하는, ‘민주시민’으로서의 태도가 격려되는 교실의 장이 무엇인지 사유해야 한다. 또한, 이를 위해 유아교육계는 어떤 구체적 방식으로 민주시민 교육을 실행할 것인지 창조적 지성이 요구된다.
The purpose of this study is to provide basic guidance data for early childhood education by examining how ‘formation of democratic citizens’ is formed in the field based on Dewey's theory. To this end, from March 2017 to October 2017, 23 children aged 5 and 1 teacher, treated as members of the community, participated in the study with the aim of exploring the meaning of democratic citizens through their daily life interactions. The results were as follows. First, the characteristics of the interactions in the root plaques were “interactions sharing norms” and “interactions toward relationships.” Second, the meanings of democratic citizens formed through this process were “democratic citizens who lead the way in their lives” and “democratic citizens who require creative intelligence in their lives”. Dewey had opined that democratic citizens are mutually negotiating public interests. Classrooms should encourage an attitude as a 'democratic citizen' who understands, respects, shares, discusses with others in the community, and strives to achieve the good of the public, rather than unilaterally communicating or responding to what has been delivered by the authorities. Further considerations prompting the creative intelligence of the early childhood education field are necessary in order to implement democratic citizenship education.
