본 연구의 목적은 ‘하나님의 우편에 앉으셨다’는 예수에 대한 인물 묘사가 내러티브에서 차지하는 의미를 추적하고, 순교 직전의 스데반이 마지막으로 본 환상에서 목격한 예수의 ‘서 있는’ 모습에 담긴 신학적 의미를 탐색하는 것이다. 실제로 승천 이후 예수는 언제나 하나님의 우편에서 앉아 계신다. 그가 하나님의 우편에 앉아 계시다는 언급은 하나님만 갖고 있는 권위를 공유하는 것을 포함하는 동시에 그가 신적인 경배를 받는 존재로 인정받았음을 암시한다. 초기 그리스도인들은 시편 110편 1절에 근거하여 예수의 신적인 정체를 파악했다. 그렇게 영광의 자리에 앉아 있던 예수가 ‘일어선’ 것을 보았다는 스데반의 발언은 신약성서에서 유일한 언급이다. 서 있는 예수를 목격한 스데반은, 십자가에 못 박히기 전에 군인들을 용서해달라고 간구하며 영혼을 부탁하는 예수의 모습(눅 23:34, 46)과 동일하게 묘사되기에 독자의 관심을 끌기에 충분하다. 그는 디아스포라 유대인 출신의 ‘다중 문화인’과 ‘헬라파 지도자’로서(6장) 하나님의 구원사를 발언하는 연설(7장)을 통해 자신의 면모를 발휘한다. 그러므로 내러티브에서 스데반의 역할이 중량감을 가질 수밖에 없다. 그만큼 그의 연설과 그가 본 환상이 사도행전의 전체 내러티브에서 어떤 위치를 차지하는지 탐구하는 것은 흥미로운 주제가 된다. 다만 본 연구는 스데반이 목격한 환상 속에 담긴 예수의 모습을 알아보기 위해 ‘하나님의 우편에 앉아 있는’ 장면들을 먼저 분석하고 스데반의 환상에서 ‘서 있는’ 예수의 모습에 담긴 내막을 네 가지로 정리하여 가장 적합한 제안을 하려고 한다. 첫째, 순교하는 스데반을 위해 시도하는 예수의 변호를 고려할 수 있다. 둘째, 스데반을 공격하고 순교로까지 몰아가는 적대자들을 향한 예수의 심판이 함축되어 있음을 숙고할 수 있다. 셋째, 스데반을 환대하기 위해 자리를 박차고 일어서는 예수의 기민한 몸짓을 상상할 수 있다. 마지막으로, 가장 고려할 만한 해석으로써 신실한 증인인 스데반에게 크게 고무되고 감동받아 그를 맞이하려고 자리에서 일어날 수밖에 없는 예수의 행동이 바로 그것이다. 특정한 하나의 읽기 방식을 완벽한 해석으로 고집하는 것은 위험하다. 그것이 가장 설득력을 갖춘 제안일지라도 거기에 영원히 정박할 수 없다. 순교 직전의 스데반이 목격한 환상은 신약성서에서 특유한 묘사이기에 더욱 그렇다. 그러므로 본 논문은 하나의 해석을 고정된 읽기를 고집하거나 주장하기보다는 여러 가지의 해석을 축적하는 방식을 활용하라고 제안하고자 한다. 그러한 관점으로 차근차근 읽고 해석한 것을 또 다시 채워가는 방식이야말로 성서 읽기의 지평을 점차로 확대하는 것으로써 큰 의미를 줄 것이 분명하다.
The goal of research is to identify the meaning within the narrative regarding the depiction of ‘Jesus who sat at the right hand of God’ and to explore the theological meaning with regards to the depiction of ‘Jesus standing’ in which Stephen witnesses such vision right before his martyrdom. After the ascension, in effect, Jesus always sits at the right hand of God. The account that Jesus is at the right hand of God illustrates the shared authority which is only possessed by God as well as indicates that Jesus is seen as an existence to be divinely worshipped. Based on Psalms 110:1, the early Christians recognized Jesus as a divine entity. Stephen’s statement, who saw Jesus standing up from the seat of glory, is the only reference which is mentioned in the New Testament. Stephen witnessing Jesus standing up is enough to capture the readers’ attention as the act of asking forgiveness and pleading for the souls of soldiers is portrayed in the same manner as the image of Jesus. Stephen is able to demonstrate his countenance as being a ‘multi-culturalist’ with the background of Jewish Diaspora as well as a ‘hellenist leader’ through the speech of asserting the salvation of God. Accordingly, Stephen’s role inevitably is bound to have authority within the narrative. This is why exploring what position Stephen’s speech and vision take within the entire narrative of Acts becomes a fascinating subject. At the same time, in order to identify the image of Jesus within the vision that Stephen witnesses, this study will firstly examine the scenes of ‘sitting at the right of God,’ and then most appropriately propose the undercurrent of Jesus standing in Stephen’s vision through four ways. Firstly, it is possible to consider that Jesus is attempting to defend Stephen who is suffering martyrdom. Secondly, Jesus’ judgment upon those who are attacking and driving Stephen towards martyrdom could be implicitly implied. Thirdly, one could imagine Jesus’ swift gesture who is standing up from the seat to welcome Stephen. Lastly, the most deserving interpretation is that Jesus is greatly moved and inspired by the faithful witness and thus has to stand up to greet Stephen. It is risky to insist upon a specific reading method as an ultimate interpretation. It is impossible to be anchored in one place forever, albeit the proposal may be most persuasive. This is especially true since the vision that Stephen witnesses before the martyrdom is a unique description within the New Testament. Therefore, rather than insisting or arguing on one fixed interpretation, this study proposes to utilize various interpretation in ways to accumulate. It is clear that by gradually expanding the horizon of Bible reading through reading and interpreting step by step wherein this process is taken again, such perspective will offer great significance.
