박경리의 작품들을 보면 여인의 한과 비극성으로 집결된다. 이는 작가 박경리 개인의 슬픔과 아픔을 극화시킨 작품으로의 승화였다. 이렇듯 작가의 운명적 고통 체험을 근간으로 내면화와 육화된 일련의 장편 중 별미로 꼽히는 작품이 『김약국의 딸들』이다. 대를 이어 내려오는 운명적 불행과 비극적으로 몰락해 가는 김약국의 가족사를 통해 이에 맞서 저항하는 여성 인물들의 강인한 생명력과 의지를 분석하고자 했다. 박경리는 『김약국의 딸들』을 통하여 3대에 걸친 비극의 내림을 극적으로 형상화하였다. 인간의 의지로 어떻게 할 수 없는 여러 양상의 죽음과 전통적 유교사회에서 신성시되던 정조관념이 무너졌을 때 여성들의 인생은 처참함뿐이라는 사실을 말해준다. 또 뚜렷한 반상 계급사회에서 신분을 뛰어넘은 사랑은 금기였으며 이 규칙을 깬 연인은 고독과 불행 그리고 경멸만이 기다리고 있었다. 이러한 사회제도적 속박과 모순을 안은 가부장사회에서 여성이란 칠거지악의 멍에 속에 남성에 의한 속박과 희생의 대상이었다. 남성 논리의 잣대로 여성에게 요구한 것은 끝없는 인내와 순종이였으며 이를 큰 부덕으로 치켜세웠다. 여성에게만 강요되었던 많은 덕목들은 여인들 가슴에 옹어리로 남아 한국적 정서인 한으로 표출되었다. 남성중심사회에서 남자라는 이유만으로 대접받는, 그래서 아들이 없다는 것은 큰 불행으로 치부되었다. 오래 전에 비상 먹고 자결한 생모를 둔 성수 김약국은 딸만 다섯을 두어 대가 끊길 위험에 처한 현실과 계속되는 딸들의 불행을 통하여 작가 박경리는 운명이란 단어를 대입시킨다. 개인의 의지와 노력과는 무관하게 자연발생적으로 연속되는 불운을 선대에 한 맺힌 영혼의 세계와 결부시킴으로써 신비화시킨다. 그러나 비극적인 운명에 목적 없이 무너져 내리는 개인의 무력화라기보다는 그 각 개체들이 자신의 의지로 운명을 극복하고자 하는 강한 의지의 발현이 『김약국의 딸들』의 생명력이자 작품성이라 말할 수 있겠다. 결국, 시종일관되는 불운의 연속 속에서 속절없이 불행의 나락으로 떨어지는 수동성이 아닌 사나운 운명 앞에 보이는 당당함과 자기주관 그리고 극복하려는 의지를 강하게 나타냄으로써 주워진 현실에 맞서서 살아내려는 인간의 노력이 극적으로 표현되었기 때문에 감동적인 공감대를 형성했다고 생각한다.

Park, Kyoung-Lee's work concentrates on the tragedy of the female condition and the long-standing enmity resulting from it. The author's choice of focus had much to do with the unfortunate circumstances of her own life. However, sad as they were, by providing the stimulus for her literary work, these tragic personal events also had a positive impact. For instance, her best-known novel Pharmacist Kim's Daughters was based on the real life experiences of her own anguished destiny. This paper focuses on the will to live of the author's female characters in the face of overwhelming adversity. Pharmacist Kim's Daughters is concerned with three generations of tragedy which afflicted the women of the family. Of particular importance are the uncontrollable nature of death, and the results of both lost chastity and love which attempts to breach the barriers of social class in traditional Confucian society. In general, the novel explores the victimization of women in a traditional patriarchal social context. In this society a woman was valued in accordance with the strength of her patience and obedience. Additionally, the multitude of rules to which a woman was subject led to unhappiness and over time grew to become an ever-present sense of resentment. This resentment of 'Han(恨)' has become a part of the Korean character. As men were of primary importance in this society, male offspring were essential to maintaining the status quo. Thus. to be without a male heir was source of great sorrow. In the novel. the characters are repeatedly anguished by this condition for no other apparent reason than that of an unkind destiny. The relationship between the miseries of one generation and those of a another is the central mystery of the novel. Finally, the heart of the novel is the struggle to overcome this destiny through the use of sheer will. Rather than passively succumbing to the unhappiness of destiny, the author shows us that one can take a positive stance and transcend destiny by force of will. This struggle of the individual against fate is sure to evoke sympathy in the reader.
