The main focus of my analysis is the sluicing phenomenon, which is form of wh-stranding ellipsis. The ability to make the inference that the wh element should be interpreted as scoping over that material is determined by the presence of a suitable antecedent clause. It has been proposed that the ellipsis site and the antecedent have to be syntactically identical. Merchant(2001) calls this requirement the ‘structural isomorphism condition on ellipsis’. There has been some debate on whether ellipsis requires the strict syntactic identity between the antecedent and the ellipsis or not. However, this study aims to re-examine the structural isomorphism and exploit the syntactic identity condition to license the ellipsis phenomena especially in sluicing.
