인천 지역의 만신이 몸주신으로 더글러스 맥아더 장군을 섬기는 현상에 대해서 많은 주목이 있어왔다. 실존인물이 인격신으로 좌정한 측면에서 맥아더 장군은, 그 외국인으로써의 측면과 현대인으로써의 측면이 공존한다. 맥아더를 섬기는 강신무는 굿을 연행할 때, 미군 군복을 입고 맥아더의 아이콘이라 볼 수 있는 선글라스와 담뱃대를 착용하여 신을 부른다. 그 화제성에도 불구하고, 맥아더 숭배에 대한 심층적인 연구는 제한적으로만 진행되어 왔다. 그렇기 때문에, 맥아더 신앙을 심도 있게 연구한다면 종교와 신앙이 실시간으로 변화하고 진화하여 나가는 것에 대한 소중한 사례가 될 것이라고 믿는다. 본 연구는 맥아더 장군 신앙의 특이함을 이야기하고자 함이 아니다. 반대로 맥아더 신앙의 연행 과정과 배경, 그를 섬기는 만신의 입신과정부터 현재의 모습까지를 가까이에서 연구함으로써, 맥아더 장군의 신앙은 오히려 우리 무속의 역사에서 꾸준히 존재해온 장군신의 형상과 일맥상통하는, 무속 전통의 연장선상에서 존재한다는 것을 논증하려 한다.
The phenomenon of Korean shaman, or mudang, channelling and worshipping General Douglas MacArthur is somewhat popular among those who are aware of modern Korean history and culture. However, it is not something the native Koreans envision when thinking about ‘shamanism’ in general. In this paper, I will attempt to bridge the chasm between the traditional, “Korean,” shamanism and the unforseen deity of an American General, by conducting a series of interviews to a Korean mudang who serves the General as part of her main Pantheon. The image of the short, soft-spoken female shaman donning American service uniform, putting on MacArthur’s all-too-famous sunglasses and corncob pipe to suddenly be bold and confident in front of her believers, is not a unique sight. It is a continuation of generations-long worship of historical marshal generals; Douglas MacArthur only followed in a track of Korean generals.
