1960년대는 민주화의 열망이 좌절되었으며 재벌과 결탁된 군부독재가 정당화되었고 외국문화가 주류문화처럼 횡행하던 시기였다. 작가 최인훈의 초기 소설경향은 부정의한 정치권력에 대한 저항으로 ‘행동’을 실존의 문제와 결부시켰다면, 그 후 이중 삼중의 모순적 근대를 맞이하여 새로운 예술관을 모색할 수밖에 없었다. 그 새로운 예술관을 담고 있는 소설이 「하늘의 다리」이다. 소설 「하늘의 다리」는 최인훈이 기존 소설에서 보여준 환상적 소재를 사용했던 것처럼 가상의 소재인 ‘하늘의 다리’가 소설전반에 표상되고 대칭적으로 6･25 전쟁의 경험이 놓이면서 상당히 모호하고 난해성을 지닌 작품이라고 할 수 있다. 하지만 이 소설에는 그의 새로운 예술관과 그에 따른 예술가의 모습이 오롯이 놓여 있다고 할 것이다. 이를 파악하기 위해서는 먼저 소설 속에 산재해 있는 ‘하늘의 다리’를 분석해야 한다. 이 소설의 소재인 ‘하늘의 다리’는 김준구의 결핍된 ‘예술적 욕망’이면서도 다른 한편으로는 그의 책임의식이 개인에서 사회적 문제로 확대되어 융합되어 있다. 이를 바탕으로 새롭게 정립된 예술관은 정치와 자본과 외국문화의 결합된 형태인 모순된 풍속의 본질을 드러낸 것으로 나타난다. 또한 예술가 특히 문학가는 소재를 판단함에 있어 풍속과 관련하여 살피고 그것을 상상력을 바탕으로 표현해야 한다는 것이다. 주목할 점은 이후 창작된 최인훈의 소설 『소설가 구보씨의 一日』은 소설 「하늘의 다리」에서 정립한 예술관을 적극적으로 반영한 작품이라고 할 수 있다.
The 1960s was a time when democratization aspirations were frustrated, military dictatorships conglomerated with chaebol were justified, and foreign cultures prevailed like mainstream culture. Choi In-hoon's early novels tended to pursue a new view of the arts in the face of the contradictory modernity of the threefold, if the ‘action’ as a resistance to unjust political power was connected with the existence. The novel containing the new view of the art is 「A leg of sky」. As shown in the existing novel, the novel Bridge of Heaven is quite difficult because the bridge of heaven is represented throughout the novel and the symmetrical experiences of the 6･25 war have emerged. However, the novel shows a new view of the art and its artist. To grasp this, we need to analyze the 「A leg of sky」 scattered in the novel. ‘A leg of sky’ in this novel is Kim Joon-gu's lack of artistic desires, and is linked with it to expand responsibility from personal to social issues. Based on this, the newly established view of art reveals the nature of the contradictory customs, the combined form of politics, capital and foreign culture. In addition, artists, especially literary ones, must judge the subject matter in terms of customs and express it based on their imagination. Choi In-hoon's novel 『The Daily Story of Kubo』 is a work that actively reflects the art view established in the novel 「A leg of sky」.
