The purpose of this study is to investigate how well elementary school pre-service teachers recognize sentence stress in 48 intonational phrases of four discourses. A total of 66 juniors of a University of Education participated in this study and took a sentence stress marking test. The results revealed that the participants marked only 39.5% of sentence stress correctly. The error analysis of the wrong sentence stress showed that the main reason was not knowing the unmarked and contrastive sentence stress rules properly. Based on the findings of this study, the recognition of sentence stress should be covered in the English pronunciation course along with sentence stress production.
