『독립신문』은 당시의 시대상황을 감안할 때 파격적인 형상으로 나타났다. 이로 인해 『독립신문』을 전통과는무관한 외래의 신문물로 바라보는 시각이 여전히 뿌리 깊게 각인되어 있다. 본 논문은 『독립신문』 창간에 내적 기반을 제공했던 조선시대 한글 쓰임새의 확대 과정을 고찰했다. 특히, 조선후기 한글출판의 상업화와 한글의 공인화가 『독립신문』의 창간을 견인했던 과정과, 그 과정에 작용했던 동인들을 집중 탐구했다. 이를 바탕으로, 순 한글 신문이라는 『독립신문』의 독특한 형상은 전통과 근대가 융합한 산물임을 논증하였다.
It is commonly held that Dokribsinmun has been not related with the traditional cultures, but imported from foreign countries. Considering the circumstances of Chosun Dynasty, Dokribsinmun was kind of preposterous form. This paper tries to divulge the background of Dokribsinmun with the focus of the diffusion of hangeul among common people after Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. Especially, around the latter periods of Chosun Dynasty, the commercialization of Hangeul and official recognition of Hangeul have played a great role in making Dokribsinmun possible. This paper argues that Dokribsinmun is kind of fusion of traditional cultures of Korea and the form of modernity.
