‘손님굿 무가’는 근대 이전 질병에 대한 관찰을 바탕으로 한 질병문학이다. 전염병이 어떻게 인간의 삶에 오게 되었는지 설명하는 신화로, 두창이라는 질병에 대한 관찰을 기반으로 질병의 증상 변화와 치유 과정이 담겨 있으며, 이는 구전되었던 민간의 의료 지식이었다. 이 서사는 왜 질병이 생겼는가에 대해 질문하지 않는다. 질병의 원인이 인간의 신체 바깥에 있는 외부적 요인에 의해 발생한 것으로 생각하며, 이 외부적 존재를 신으로 상징화하였으며, 이를 ‘노정기(路程記)’라는 독특한 형식으로 노래하고 있다. 또한 두창의 신격은 여성과 남성이 개별적으로 존재하며, 남성 신격이 퇴치되어야 할 대상이라면, 여성 신격은 질병신이자 치유자로 등장한다. 무엇보다 한국 무속의 질병신화는 질병신을 경외하기보다는, 질병에 걸린 환자에 시선을 두었다. 동해안 <손님굿>의 철앵이, 서울굿의 호구는 환자의 위치에 머무르지 않고 죽음을 통해 치유적 의미를 획득한다. 제주도의 두신은 무분별한 질병의 존재였던 탓에 신인데도 징벌의 대상이 된다. 한국 무속의 질병신화는 환자를 낫게 하기 위해 부르는 노래이며, 질병신은 환자를 위해 존재한다. 또한 호구나 철앵이와 같이 ‘상처받은 자가 상처를 치유한다’는 맥락을 통해 존재의 유한성에 얽매이지 않음으로써 질병으로 인한 인간 존재의 한계 극복을 지향하는 신화이다.
"Sonnimgut Muga" is a Korean disease literature based on observations of pre-modern diseases. It contains myths explaining how a epidemic came into human life, based on the observation of a disease called Duchang. It examines the process of changing symptoms and healing of a disease. This was the medical knowledge that has been tradionally hanaed down through generations. Sonnimgut can be seen as Koreans' religious and cultural response to epidemic disease are external factors, outside of the human body. This is symbolized as a god or deity, and songs are sung about this in a unique form called "nojeonggi." Also, if the stature of the Duchang exists separately between women and men, and if a male deity is something that should be eradicated, a female-deity is both a disease god and a healer. The myths about disease in Korean shamanism were never songs that feared the disease but were rather focused on patients with the disease. In donghaiangut and seoulgut, the patient does not stay in the sick but obtains a therapeutic meaning through death. Jeju-gut is subject to punishment even though it is a god, because it was a reckless disease. The myth of a disease in Korean shamanism is shamanism is embodied in songs that are sung to heal the patient and about the disease god that is believed to exist outside of the patient. These myths also aim to overcome the limitations of human existence, caused by diseases, by not being bound to the finite nature of existence, through the invocation of the idea of "the wounded heals the wounds."
