이 글에서는 <만복사저포기>가 지닌 민속 문화적 요소를 교육 내용으로 구성할 필요가 있음을 밝히고, 이러한 교육 내용을 바탕으로 <만복사저포기>가 지닌 문화교육적 의의를 제시하였다. 고전소설 교육의 목표가 당대의 시대 상황과 문화적 특성 이해를 중심으로 한 문화 향유 역량 함양에 있다고 할 때, <만복사저포기>에 나타난 민속 문화적 요소를 추출하고, 이를 바탕으로 교육 내용을 구성할 필요가 있다. 우선, 작품에 나타난 허혼과 장례 풍속은 전통적 영혼관과 세계관을 바탕으로 형성된 의례로서 당대인의 생활 방식과 가치 체계를 알 수 있는 중요한 민속 문화적 요소이다. 또한 소설을 구성하는 다양한 문화적 상징 매개체, 즉 죽은 여인의 환체와 살아 있는 남성과의 결연을 중심으로 구성된 서사, 만복사나 개령동 등의 경계적 속성을 지닌 공간적 배경 등은 한국의 고대적 민간사상과 내세관, 인생관 등을 알 수 있게 하는 문화적 지표로서 의미가 있다. <만복사저포기>는 다양한 문화적 가치 체계를 담고 있는 고전소설로서 과거와 현대의 다양한 문화적 정체성을 경험할 수 있는 문화교육적 제재로서의 의의가 크다.
