초등영어교육에 있어 파닉스가 차지하는 비중은 계속 증가하고 있으며, 이에 따라 초등영어 교과서 에 나타난 파닉스의 내용과 지도 방법 등을 분석한 연구도 많이 이루어지고 있다. 그러나 지금까지의 거의 모든 연구가 특정 학년이나 학년군을 대상으로 하고 있다(고여림, 2012; 김영숙, 2016; 윤여범, 2019). 그 이유는 연구 대상인 교과서가 대부분 4학년 또는 3~4학년군에서만 파닉스를 다루고 있기 때문이다. 특정 학년이나 학년군만을 분석 대상으로 하면 파닉스 규칙의 전체적인 계열성을 파악하기 곤란하다. 본 연구에서는 2009 개정 교육과정과 2015 개정 교육과정에 따른 초등영어 교과서 중 3~6 학년 전체에서 파닉스를 다루고 있는 3종 교과서를 선정하여, 파닉스 규칙의 종류와 제시 방식을 비교 하였다. 분석 결과, 파닉스 규칙의 종류에 있어서 초성 자음과 단모음 규칙은 교과서 간의 차이가 거의 없었지만, 종성 자음 규칙은 차이가 컸다. 또한 장모음 규칙은 파닉스에서 차지하는 중요성에도 불구 하고 3종 교과서에서 거의 다루어지지 않고 있었다. 또한 3~6학년 전체를 비교한 결과, 자음 규칙과 모음 규칙이 균형 있게 배분되지 않은 교과서도 있었다. 파닉스 규칙의 제시 방식에 있어서도 3종 교 과서는 많은 차이를 보였으며, 대표적인 차이는 단원별 파닉스 규칙의 수, 단원별 파닉스 규칙의 선정 방식에 있었다. 차기 교육과정에 따라 개발될 교과서에서는 파닉스 규칙이 보다 더 체계적으로 제시될 필요성이 있다. 또한 초등영어교육에서 파닉스가 차지하는 중요성을 감안하면 모든 검인정 교과서에서 파닉스를 3~6학년 전체에서 다루게 되도록 새로운 교육과정에는 파닉스 관련 내용이 학년별로 보다 더 구체적으로 명시될 필요가 있다.
Many studies have been carried out to compare phonics in primary English textbooks. However, almost all of these studies were limited to grades 3 and 4. To compare phonics more systematically, however, it is necessary to observe phonics in all the four grades. It was found that only three textbooks from the 2009 and 2015 Revised National Curriculum covered phonics in all four grades. This study was done to find (1) what kinds of phonics rules are used and (2) how phonics rules are presented in these three textbooks. The main results were as follows. First, phonics rules regarding final consonants, consonant clusters showed largest differences. The total number of consonant rules varied from 21 to 38, which was also a large difference. Short vowel rules were fully presented, but long vowel rules were very rare in all three textbooks. Second, the three textbooks were also very different in how phonics rules were presented. Main differences were found in (1) how many phonics rules are presented in each lesson and (2) whether phonics rules were presented using words or sentences. It is hoped that in the textbooks of the new national curriculum, phonics will be dealt with more systematically on the basis of the results of the current study, and that all the textbooks of the new curriculum will cover phonics in all four grades, considering its importance in primary English education.
