『무너져 내리다 Things Fall Apart』(1958)의 대(大) 주제는 주인공 오콩크워다. 이 소설은 오콩크워의 운명에 대한 도전, 분노, 두려움, 용기, 사내다움, 행동력, 자립심, 희망과 절망, 죽음을 묘사한다. 여기서 오콩크워의 운명은 동시대의 아프리카가 직면한 현실을 상징한다. 나머지 주제들은 이 운명과의 싸움을 묘사하는 과정에서 자연스럽게 부상한다. 본 논문을 포함한 현재 진행 중인 연구는 『무너져 내리다』의 주제 구성의 이 내적 통일성과 일관성에 관한 것으로서 총 네 개의 주제를 다룬다. 첫째, 주인공 오콩크워; 둘째, 익보 사회의 전통가치; 셋째, 익보인들의 종교와 세계관; 넷째, 백인의 위선과 독선. 이 논문은 첫 번째 주제인 주인공 오콩크워에 관한 것으로서 속담을 통해 표현되는 이 주제의 하위주제들을 분석한다.
Things Fall Apart deals with four main themes: 1. the hero Okonkwo; 2. the traditional values of the Ibo people; 3. their religion, philosophy, and ancestors; 4. the self-righteousness and hypocrisy of white men. The sub-themes of ‘Okonkwo’ are grouped into several types: Okonkwo’s fight against fate and fate’s response; his qualities (courage, action, manliness, self-reliance, impetuosity, arrogance); his state of mind (anger, fear, hope, despair); qualities of those for whom Okonkwo has contempt (effeminacy, inaction, dependency). This article is primarily concerned with the first theme ‘Okonkwo’ and its sub-themes. The other main themes (2, 3 and 4) will be discussed in a subsequent study.
