본 논문에서는 충북의 로컬리티에 대한 저간의 논의들을 비판적으로 검토한 후 ‘패퇴와 도모의 땅’이라는 도전적인 시각 하에 송강묘의 이장에 얽힌 복잡한 사연들을 추적해 보았다. 필자가 도달한 잠정적인 결론을 제시하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 충청은 한반도 남부의 한가운데에 위치해 있으며, 이와 같은 지리적 조건은 충청 특유의 심상지리로 연결되는바, ‘서울’도 아니고 그렇다고 해서 ‘비(非)서울’도 아닌 경계지로서의 특성이 충청의 로컬리티를 파악하는 데 있어 긴요한 요소이다. 둘째, 이중환은 그가 남긴 『택리지』에서 충청에 대해 “오로지 권세와 이익만을 좇는다.”고 평가했는데, 권력에 대한 열망이 높다는 것은 권력을 쟁취해야만 하는 동기가 뚜렷하며, 또한 쟁취할 수 있는 가능성이 높다는 의미로도 읽힌다. 이런 측면에서 중앙에서의 패배를 수용하고 지방으로의 퇴각을 결행할 때 적지 않은 사람들이 충청으로 향했던 데에는 서울과 가까워서 풍속이 다르지 않다는 점에 더해 훗날의 승리를 도모하기에 적합하다는 이유 역시 한몫했을 것이다. 셋째, 경기 고양에서 충북 진천으로 옮겨진 송강묘의 이장이 충북 지역 서인들에 의해 주도적으로 추진되었던 것은 분산된 자당의 세력을 규합하여 중앙의 헤게모니를 선점하기 위한 정치적 세리모니의 일환으로 보이는바, 충북의 로컬리티를 타진하는 데 있어 이러한 종류의 사례들은 꾸준히 축적될 필요가 있다.
After reviewing the old discussions about the locality of Chungbuk in a critical manner, this study traced complex situations involved in the relocation of Songgang's tomb under the challenging vision of "land of retreat and conspiracy." The investigator reached the following tentative conclusions: First, Chungcheong is located at the center of the southern Korean Peninsula. This geographic condition has been linked to the unique imaginary geography of Chungcheong. Its characteristics as the borderland that is neither "Seoul" nor "non-Seoul" are useful to understand the locality of Chungcheong. Secondly, Lee Jung-hwan in his Taekriji wrote that Chungcheong was "in pursuit of only power and profit." Great desire for power is interpreted as a clear motivation to seize power and high possibilities of doing so. In this aspect, many people headed to Chungcheong after accepting their defeat in the central politics and deciding on a retreat to a local area because Chungcheong shared the same customs with Seoul for its geographical adjacency to it and also was a proper area to conspire for future victory. Finally, the relocation of Songgang's tomb from Goyang, Gyeonggi to Jincheon, Chungbuk was led by the Seoin members in the Chungbuk area. It was part of their political ceremony to muster the party's distributed forces and preoccupy the central hegemony. There is a need to accumulate cases of this type consistently to explore the locality of Chungbuk.
