함경도 방언에 관한 연구는 광복과 한중 수교를 기준으로 대체로 세 시기로 나눌 수 있다. 함경도의 지리적 위치 때문에 그에 관한 연구가 늘 활발하게 진행된 것은 아니지만, 큰 범위에서 볼 때 학자들은 서로 다른 주제를 가지고 지속적인 연구를 진행해왔다. 본고는 그동안에 이루어진 함경도 방언 연구를 토대로 기존에 정리된 것을 종합하고 2000년대 이후에 이루어진 연구들을 보충하여 함경도 방언 연구의 대체적인 흐름과 경향을 살펴보았다. 또한, 지금까지 이루어진 연구 내용을 시기별, 지역별로 검토하고 연구 과정에서 나타나는 문제점과 함경도 방언 연구가 지향해야 할 방향을 제시하였다.
Researches of academic community on Hamgyong dialect have been conducted based on three important historical periods divided by the “Recovery” and the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Korea. Due to the special geography of Hamgyong province, the academic community has not carried out systematic researches yet. Therefore, this paper summarizes main outcomes of studies on Hamgyong dialect since 2000 to get a full grasp of status quo, existing problems and future directions of studies in this field.
