본 연구는 매체 전환을 통한 스토리텔링의 변화와 방향이라는 측면에서 일본 애니메이션 ≪인랑≫(1999)과 국내 영화 <인랑>(2018)을 비교분석한다. 본 연구의 목적은 각색의 결과가 원작의 수준에 어느 정도 근접하는가와 같은 소위 ‘충실성의 원칙’을 벗어나는 데 있다. 즉, 각색을 단순한 원작의 기표 재현이 아닌 하나의 독립된 텍스트로서 내적 완결성의 측면에서 논의한다. 본고는 충실성의 원칙이 각색이 내포한 여러 가지 가능성을 제한한다는 린다 허천(Hutcheon., L.)의 관점에 동의한다. 매체 전환이 활발하게 이루어지는 최근의 경향에 비추어볼 때, ‘충실성 원칙’이 실제 각색 과정과 결과물에서 과연 실질적인 영향력을 발휘하기 힘들다고 보기 때문이다. ≪인랑≫을 각색한 <인랑>은 원작이 설정한 일본의 특수한 역사적 상황을 한국의 남북통일로 바꾸었지만 변화된 배경의 개연성이 높지 않아 내적 설득력 확보에 실패한 것으로 보인다. 이와 함께 단선적인 선악 구도의 설정은 원작이 지닌 의미 위에 또 다른 의미를 창출하는 각색의 근본적 목적을 실현하지 못하는 근본적인 원인 중의 하나로 보인다. <인랑>의 실패는 원작을 충실하게 재현하지 못했기 때문이 아니라 각색 자체가 내적 완결성을 확보하는데 실패함으로써 결과적으로 새로운 의미, 즉 각색 텍스트의 세계관을 제대로 구축할 수 없었기 때문이다.
This study compares and analyzes Japanese animation “Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade” (1999) and domestic film “ILLANG: THE WOLF BRIGADE”(2018) in terms of change and direction of storytelling through media conversion. The purpose of this study is to deviate from the so-called "principle of faithfulness", such as how closely the results of adaptation are to the level of the original. In other words, I will discuss the adaptation in terms of internal completeness as an independent text rather than a simple representation of the original. This study agrees with Hutcheon., L.'s view that the principle of fidelity limits the many possibilities of adaptation. In light of the recent trend of active media transitions, it is hard to believe that the principle of "faithfulness" has a real impact on the actual adaptation process and its output. “ILLANG: THE WOLF BRIGADE”, adapted from “Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade”, changed Japan's special historical situation set by the original to Korea, but failed to secure internal persuasion due to the low probability of the changed background. In addition, the setting of the linear good and evil composition seems to be one of the fundamental reasons for failing to realize the purpose of creating another meaning on the original meaning. The failure of “ILLANG: THE WOLF BRIGADE” is not due to the failure to faithfully reproduce the original. The reason why “ILLANG: THE WOLF BRIGADE” failed is that the adaptation itself failed to secure internal integrity, resulting in the inability to construct a new meaning, that is, the world view of the adaptation text.
