1960년대 이후 청년문화는 사회변혁을 주도하는 모멘텀으로 간주되어 왔다. 정치적 부조리에 대한 저항의 거점이었던 청년문화는 오늘날 일상과 삶의 영역으로 옮겨왔으며, 예술의 공공성을 실천하는 주요한 지점이자 지역사회 발전을 위한 새로운 원동력이라는 또 다른 가치로 주목받기 시작했다. 이 논문에서는 2018년과 2019년에 각각 실시한 부산과 제주 청년문화예술의 실태 연구를 위한 청년문화예술인 대상 설문조사 및 심층면접 결과를 바탕으로, 이제껏 주류담론의 주변부에 머물러 있던 청년문화예술 활동의 공공적 역할을 탐색하였다. 그 결과 청년문화예술은 다양한 관점을 생산하고 개방적 문화 수용을 통한 사회 주체를 육성하며, 지역사회 현안을 논하는 공론장을 형성하는 역할을 담당하고 있었다. 현재 청년문화예술의 장에서 다양한 사회적 이슈가 활발하게 논의되고 있음을 감안할 때, 앞으로 예술의 공공적 성격을 실현할 수 있는 사회적 담론을 적극적으로 생산하고 새로운 방향성을 제시할 것이라 기대한다. 이러한 청년 주체들의 창발적인 에너지와 자유로운 활동을 독려하고 품을 때, 청년문화예술은 예술의 공공성을 확보해 나가는 미학적 실천을 통해 다양한 사회적 가치로 확산될 수 있을 것이다.
Since the 1960s, youth culture has been regarded as a momentum that drives social change. The heavy discourse of youth culture as a resistance to political absurdity has moved into the realm of daily life and life in these days. In addition, it has gained attention as another value as a new driving force for local development. Based on results of survey and in-depth interview for researches of youth culture and arts in Busan and Jeju that were conducted in 2018 and 2019 respectively, this study explored the public role of youth cultural and art. As a result, it was found that youth culture and art played a role in producing various viewpoints, fostering social subjects through open cultural acceptance, and forming public spheres for discussing social issues. Given that the wide range of social issues are actively discussed in the field of youth culture and art, it is expected to contain new social discourse in the future. It is the time to encourage and embrace the youth’s creative energy and un-standardized activities, then the public role of youth culture and arts will be more valuable.
