Middle school history textbooks are the first and last medium of world history education for many students. Therefore, it is required to suggest alternatives, analyze the textbooks, and find problems through various research on the contents of middle school history textbooks and their description methods. In this paper, eight history textbooks for the revised 2009 middle school were analyzed by focusing on Roman history. As a result, the following problems were diagnosed: First, it is difficult to understand the contents due to excessive reduction of the volume of textbooks. Second, the text of the textbooks is described in specific areas. Third, it does not help improve historical thinking ability by asking limited questions or simple memory questions. To solve this problem, the following alternatives were proposed by referring to textbooks in England, Singapore, and Italy. First, it should present a variety of materials that stimulate students’ interest. Second, it should present wealth of materials other than political history, such as life history, micro-history, and architecture history. Third, it should provide and evaluate questions that stimulate historical thinking. Above all, the standards and perspectives of textbook descriptions should be changed so that history textbooks are compiled at the level of students, not teachers, for meaningful world history education.
