본고는 의원(醫員)이라는 소재가 설(說)에서 주제를 구현할 때 어떻게 활용되는지 살핀 연구다. 다양한 소재가 주제 구현을 위해 복무한다는 점은 설의 가장 큰 특징이다. 이 때문에 설에 나타난 소재를 살피는 것은 설 연구의 중점이 된다. 이 노력의 일환으로, 본고에서는 의원설(醫員說) 7편에 나타난 주제 구현 방식을 분석했다. 작품은 두 가지로 나뉜다. 첫째, 바람직한 의원과 그렇지 않은 의원을 대조하고 구체적인 일화를 제시해 세태를 고발한 경우다. 이 작품들은 의원의 역할이 작가에게 성찰의 대상이 된다. 둘째, 의원이 대화를 통해 병자의 인식을 전복시킨 경우다. 이 작품들은 의원이 병자에게 성찰의 계기를 제공한다. 작품 분석을 통해 의원설의 특징을 정리할 수 있었다. 첫째, 의원설은 다른 고전 서사 작품과 달리, 의원을 비현실적이고 낭만적인 영웅으로 그리지 않고, 장황한 의학 이론을 전달하는 주체자로 설정하지도 않는다. 설은 일상에 가까운 소재를 끌어와 인간의 보편적인 이치를 깨닫는 내용을 주로 전달하므로, 의원에게 병을 고치는 일 이외에 다른 능력을 부여할 필요가 없기 때문이다. 둘째, 의원설은 작중 인물이 뚜렷한 목적을 가지고 만나기 때문에 우연한 만남 혹은 단순한 호기심 등이 나타나지 않는다. 생활 속에서 벌어지는 의외의 광경과 이를 통한 작은 깨달음은 설의 주요 창작 배경이지만, 의원설은 의외의 내용이 전개되지 않는다. 다만, 작가가 이야기하고 싶은 특정 문제와 해결책을 ‘병과 치료’로 비유함으로써 독자로 하여금 문제를 직시하고 올바른 해결책을 모색할 수 있도록 돕는다.
This paper focuses on how doctors in the Seol contribute to the implement the themes. A typical feature of the Seol is that various materials serve for the implementation of the themes. Therefore, Seol research should focus on examining various aspects of materials. As part of this effort, this study analyzed the way of implementing the themes about doctor in Seol. Works are divided into two types. First, it is a case of criticizing the social conditions by comparing a good doctor with not a doctor, and by presenting specific anecdotes. Second, it is a case that the doctor switched the sick’s perception through dialogue. In Seol, doctors do not appear as fantastic and romantic heroes. The doctor in the Seol only serves as a means to communicate what the writer wants to say. The theme of the work suggests a generally desirable human figure, and allows us to distinguish the means and ends of the problem. Furthermore, it criticizes the absurdity of society. In other words, the Seol features a social function. This is a characteristic of a Seol in which a doctor appears and also the difference from literary works of other genres in which a doctor appears.
