이 글은 아퀴나스가 철학과 신학의 관계를 설명하는 과정에서 사용한 물과 포도주의 비유에 초점을 맞추고자 한다. 물은 철학이라는 세속적인 지혜를, 포도주는 그리스도교의 신앙, 또는 신학을 상징한다. 그는 물에 포도주를 섞는 것이 아니라 물이 포도주로 바뀌는 것이라는 비유를 통해 그 둘의 관계를 설명한다. 이 글은 섞임과 바뀜이라는 비유가 의미하는 바는 무엇인지, 그리고 만일 물이 포도주로 바뀌듯이 철학이 신학으로 바뀐다면, 철학의 자율성은 보장될 수 있는지에 대해 물음을 제기하면서 철학의 자율성에 대한 아퀴나스의 입장을 비판적으로 검토하고자 한다.
This paper aims to Aquinas’s metaphor of water and wine used in accounting for the relationship between philosophy and theology. While water represents secular wisdom or philosophy, wine signifies Christian faith or theology. He argues that the water of philosophy does not mix with the wine of Christian theology, but the water of philosophy is turned into the wine of Christian theology. I wish to examine Aquinas’s position through dealing with the questions of what mixtio and conversio mean in his usage, and whether or nor the autonomy of philosophy might be safeguarded in case philosophy is turned to theology just as water is transformed into wine.
