이 연구는 지역지리학과 인문학의 융합 분야로서 지역인문학을 정의하고, 부평 문화권을 사례로 지역인문학의 융성에 관해 논의한다. 지역인문학이란용어의 용례는, 아주 드물긴 하지만, 미국의 경우 고유의 지역 정체성을 보이는 지리적 지역을 대상으로 하는, 그 지역의 역사․문화에 대한 연구 및 이해에 토대를 둔 인문학으로 정의된다. 따라서 지역인문학은 지역 정체성을 구성하는 여러 차원들 중에서도 ‘장소’ 탐구에 특별한 강조점을 두는 것이 중요한 특징이다. 부평 문화권은 700여 년의 시간 속에서 다양한 문화경관과 장소들이 쌓여 지역문화의 두께를 더하고 고유의 지역 정체성 형성을 도왔다. 하지만 근대이행기의 부평은 이전의 역사부평과 시간적 단절을 겪는 한편, 심지어 식민부평이라는 부정적 이미지로 점철되었다. 더구나 근현대 시기에는 부평 문화권이 계양구, 부평구, 서구, 부천시 등의 행정 구역으로 분할되면서 공간적 단절을 경험하기까지 하였다. 이런 상황을 염두에 둘 때 부평 문화권의 시민들에게 지역인문학의 융성은 다른 어느 지역보다도 절실한 문제이다. 지역인문학은 ‘역사부평과 근대부평 사이의 시간적 단절’과 ‘근현대시기에 벌어진 공간적 단절’을 치유하는 일, 그리고 근대부평에 각인된 식민부평이란 어두운 측면을 재해석하는 일과 식민부평 일변도의 이미지를 깨뜨릴수 있는 다종의 근대문화경관과 장소들을 발굴하는 일에 기여할 것이며, 미래부평의 시민들에게 지역 정체성 증진을 바탕으로 한 자존감의 고양과 정신세계의 풍요로움, 시민 담론의 성장을 담보할 것이다.
This Study defines regional humanities as a conversance discipline composed of regional geography and humanities, then discusses the enrichment of the regional humanities of Bupyeong culture region in Korea. The usage of the term ‘regional humanities’, but in USA it is defined as a humanities based on the study and understanding of the history and culture of a geographical region. Therefore, it is an important feature that regional humanities have special emphasis on ‘place’ among various dimensions approaching a culture region. Bupyeong culture region has accumulated various places and cultural landscapes in the past 700 years, helping to increase the thickness of local culture and helping to form a unique regional identities. However, the Bupyeong culture region of the modern transition period in Korea suffered the temporal breaks with the so-called ‘Historical Bupyeong’ and the colonial bureaucracy gave this region some negative images. In addition, the Bupyeong culture region of modern age has suffered the spatial breakdowns by dividing into several administrative districts such as Geyang-gu, Bupyung-gu, Seo-gu and Bucheon-city. Today, the enrichment of regional humanities is an urgent issue for citizens living in Bupyeong culture area. The regional humanities of this region will contribute to the healing of temporal breaks in Japanese imperialism of the modern period in Korea and of the spatial breakdown of modern times, reinterpret the various modern cultural landscapes and places that can break the image of so-called ‘colonial Bupyeong’ while relighting the dark side of colonial bureaucracy, and guarantee the future citizens of this region to enhance self-esteem, spiritual world, and civil discourse based on regional identities.
