본 논고는 이집트의 수도였던 알렉산드리아(Alexandria), 푸스타트(Fustat), 카이로(Cairo)의 도시 문명과 문화의 특징에 대한 연구이다. 우리의 연구는 세 수도의 초기 건설 과정과 번영기에 성취된 종교, 예술, 건축, 과학, 문예 등의 발전상에 대한 규명이다. 첫번째 수도였던 알렉산드리아에는 그리스 로마 문화가 이집트에 이식되고 비잔틴 제국의 문명이 융화되는 헬레니즘 문화가 번성하였다. 두 번째 수도 푸스타트는 암사르라 불리는 병영 도시로 아랍·이슬람 세력의 군사적인 요충지였으며, 초기 이슬람 왕조의 터전으로 3세기에 걸쳐 수도의 기능을 담당했다. 세번째 수도 카이로는 알-하즈하르 사원을 비롯한 궁정, 대학 등의 거대한 건축물들이 웅장하고 질서 있게 세워지고, 군사, 행정기관, 상업시설, 주거 건물이 조화를 이루며 이슬람 문명이 개화하는 도시였다. 결과적으로 이집트의 알렉산드리아 시대(B.C.332)부터 이슬람이 번영하는 카이로 시기까지(A.D.982) 세 수도는 당대 최강의 절대자들에 의한 영토 확장과 문화 이식의 터전으로서 지중해 권역 최강의 군사, 종교, 무역의 도시였다. 세 수도는 동서양의 물질적, 정신적 문화의 교차지로 인구와 도시발전의 규모면에서 당대 유럽의 도시들을 압도 할뿐만 아니라 현대세계를 능가하는 문명도시였음을 알 수 있다.
This study examines the characteristics of urban civilization and culture of the three Egyptian capitals Alexandria, Fustat and Cairo. Our research examines in depth of how religion, art, architecture, science, and literature were developed from the early days of construction to the pinnacle prosperity of the three cities. In the first capital Alexandria, harmonization between ingrained ancient Greek and Roman civilization and the Byzantine civilization fostered the development of Hellenistic culture. The second capital, Pustat, was a garrison town called Amsar and a strategic military base of Arab and Muslim powers, and also served as the capital for three centuries as the site of an early Islamic dynasty. Islamic culture bloomed in the third capital Cairo, where great buildings such as the Al-Hazhar mosque, palaces, and universities were built in magnificent and orderly fashion, alongside military, administrative, commercial and residential buildings coexisting harmoniously. The three capitals from Alexandrian age(B.C.332) to the Cairene age(A.D.982), which saw the development of Islamic culture, were the place of territorial conquest and cultural transplantation by the absolute powers of the age. As well as being the strongest military, religious, and trade cities of the Mediterranean region, the capitals were the crossroads of the material and spiritual culture of the East and the West. Overwhelming European cities in terms of population and urban development, the civilization of the three cities rival those of the modern world.
