The purpose of this study was to investigate the patterns of motivational change and remotivating factors of EFL high school students who showed regaining of motivation from demotivation. It further examined differences in remotivational factors according to the students' English proficiency level. The participants were asked to check the ups and downs of their English learning motivational histories from elementary to high school, complete a questionnaire, and take part in a follow-up interview. Results of the study showed that the students became most motivated in their elementary school years, while their motivation decreased consistently as time went by and they revealed the lowest motivation in high school years. College entrance exam preparation, improvement in test scores, experiences of success in English learning, and improvement in study skills were major factors remotivating the students. Subsequent qualitative content analyses also supported these quantitative results. Regardless of the students' level of English proficiency, college entrance exam preparation was the main remotivation factor. Based on the findings, some recommendations are made to support EFL teaching and learning.
