본고의 목표는, 시간의 예술로서 서사를 바라보는 기존의 이론들을 재검토하고, 이를 바탕으로 ‘서사적 시간’의 다양한 양상을 탐구하는 일이 소설 서사의 미적 특징을 이해하는 효과적인 방식임을 증명하는데 있다. 서사 텍스트가 인간의 이야기에 관심을 두고 있는 한, 인간이 발붙이고 있는 공간으로서, 그리고 사건의 정황과 관련된 구성요건으로서 ‘시간’은 중요한 관심사일 수밖에 없기 때문이다. 이를 위해서 본고는 크게 두 차원의 연구를 진행하고 있다. 먼저 본고는 이론적인 차원에서 시간이 문학적 연구의 주제로 다뤄지게 된 과정을 추적함으로써, 문학 분석의 도구로서 서사적 시간의 이론들을 갈무리하고 있다. 특히, 바흐친이 제기한 서사적 시(공)간의 이론, 주네트의 서사담화의 전략으로서의 왜곡된 시간에 관한 연구, 그리고 리쾨르의 파편적인 시간의 통합(종합)으로서 서사에 관한 개념을 하나의 일관된 맥락 속에서 종합해보는 것은 이 논문의 중요한 부분이라고 할 수 있다. 다른 한편, 서사적 시간에 관한 이와 같은 이론들을 오정희의 초기 단편 소설에 적용함으로써, 시간의 문제가 개별 텍스트의 구성적 미학이나 작가의 주제 의식을 규명하는데 어떻게 도움이 될 수 있는지도 함께 살펴보고자 한다. 오정희 소설에서 보이는 다양한 시간의 형상화 방식들이 궁극적으로는 동일한 시공간을 공유하면서도 동시에 서로 다른 시간을 살 수밖에 없는 인간 개인들의 존재론적 숙명을 재현하고 있음을 증명하고, 그처럼 서로 다른 시간들 사이에서 벌어지는 힘의 경쟁, 일종의 시간 정치(政治)가 그의 소설 서사를 읽는 효과적인 독해가 될 수 있다고 보는 것이다.
The aim of this paper is to review existing discussions on narrative as the art of time. I believe that exploring the various aspects of the ‘narrative time’ of modern novels is an effective way of understanding the aesthetic characteristics of novel narrative. Because the narrative time is an important concern as long as the narrative is concerned with human stories. Really novels shape time in various ways and bring new insights into it. For this purpose, this paper will review the theories of narrative time. Especially a chronotope proposed by M. M. Bakhtin, the gap between story time and discourse time studied by G. Genette, and the circulation of narrative and temporality discussed by P. Ricoeur will be dealt with as important as possible in this process. These thesis are very important because these have proved a narrative makes us understand the experience of fragmented time, gives special meaning to it and constitutes the identity of the human being who lives in it. In this context, this paper will analyze how time is shaped in O, Jung-hee’s early short novels. Her novels represent what the essence of human life is through various metaphors of time. They prove narrative time can not only be the background of a story but also explain the meaning of events and make us reflect on the nature of human being.
