전 지구적으로 민주주의 이론과 정치적 현실 모두가 포퓰리즘의 확산에 의해 재도전 받는 상황에서 이 글은 포퓰리즘이 자유주의적 민주주의와 그 다원주의적 조건들에 미치는 부정적 함의를 이론적으로 명료하게 하기 위한 논의를 제공한다. 이를 위해 이 글은 포퓰리즘과 자유민주주의의 긴장을 살펴보고, 그것이 자유민주주의에 제기하는 부정적 함의를 미디어 민주주의와 포퓰리즘의 상호연관적 맥락으로 확장하여 검토한다. 이 글은 포퓰리즘을 직접적인 것에서 매개적인 혹은 간접적인 것으로 재이해하고 미디어 중심적 포퓰리즘 논의의 비규범적 순진성을 비판하며 나아가 디지털 미디어 환경과 포퓰리즘 정치학의 연관이 갖는 문제적 측면들을 쟁점화한다. 포퓰리즘은 다원주의적 의사소통과 자유주의적 정치 질서에 분명한 위험을 야기하는 또 다른 배제적 정치의 형식 혹은 과정의 징후라는 점에서 비판적 주의와 경계가 요구된다.
This paper provides a debate to clarify the negative implications of populism on liberal democracy and its pluralist conditions, With both global democratic theory and political reality being rechallenged by the rise and proliferation of populism. To this end, this author examines the tension between populism and liberal democracy and the negative implications toward liberal democracy in the interrelated context of media democracy and populism. This paper reinterprets populism from the direct to the intermediary or the indirect, criticizes the non-normative naivety of media-centric populist discussions, and further issues the problematic aspects of the relationship between digital media environment and populist politics. Contemporary Debates on populism requires critical attention and vigilance in that it indicates another form or process of exclusionary politics inherent in a risky tendency in pluralistic communication and a liberal political order.
