본 연구의 목적은 현대사회의 대중 스포츠로 자리 잡고 있는 골프문화의 기원 및 에티켓을 중요시하는 골프의 방향성을 고찰하는 것이다. 기본적으로 골프는 고가의 장비, 필드 참가비, 캐디 비용, 그리고 식대 및 여흥 등과 같은 비용이 많이 들어서 과거에는 주로 특정 계층에 한정된 레저 스포츠 활동이었다. 왜냐하면, 일반인들이 이러한 비용을 감안하고 골프를 즐기기에는 경제적인 부담이 컸기 때문이다. 그러나 오늘날 전 세계적으로 골프는 대중들이 즐기는 문화콘텐츠로서 레저 스포츠가 되었지만 다양한 문제점들을 지니고 있다. 특히, 국내 골프문화에서 상대방 비하, 캐디에 대한 부당한 대우, 저속한 표현의 사용, 탈세를 위한 수단으로 활용되는 골프장 이용 제도, 그리고 도박형 골프 등이 자행되고 있는 점에 대한 문제들이 있다. 이러한 골프의 부정적 측면들은 골프의 대중화를 방해하는 것들이라고 할 수 있다. 골프가 과도한 업무와 여유를 상실한 일상으로부터 도피를 꿈꾸는 현대인들에게 제공해줄 수 있는 매력은 현대인들이 답답한 도시에서 벗어나 여유로운 자연의 풍경과 함께 파트너와 담소를 나누며 레저를 즐길 수 있도록 해준다는 점이다. 본 연구의 시사점은 골프에 대한 본질적 기원, 개념, 문화, 그리고 가치를 종합적으로 다루고 있다는 점이다. 반면에 본 연구의 한계점은 전 세계적으로 골프문화의 대중화를 이끌어 가고 있는 미국의 골프산업에 대해서 한국여성 골퍼들의 활약상에 대한 논의에 초점을 맞춘 채, 한정된 논의를 수행하고 있다는 점이다.
The purpose of this study is to examine the origins of golf culture and the direction of golf which regards etiquette as a popular sport of modern society. Basically, golf was expensive in terms of equipment, field fees, caddy costs, and meals and entertainment, so it was primarily leisure sports activities that were limited to specific classes in the past. This is because the public has a great deal of financial burden to enjoy golf in consideration of these costs. Today, however, golf has become a leisure sport as a cultural content enjoyed by the public, but has various problems. Especially, there are problems in the domestic golf culture, such as unfair treatment of caddies, use of vulgar expressions, use of golf course utilized as a tax evasion, and gambling type golf. These negative aspects of golf are the obstacles to popularization of golf. The attraction that golfers can offer to contemporary people who dream of escaping from everyday jobs that have lost their excessive work and leisure time is that modern people are able to enjoy leisure time by sharing chat with their partner in relaxed nature scenery. The implication of this study is that it deals with the intrinsic origin, concept, culture, and value of golf. On the other hand, the limitation of this study is that it focuses on the debate about the performance of Korean women golfers in the US golf industry, which is leading the popularization of golf culture worldwide.
