산타야나는 그의 전체 미학의 전개에서 예술의 가치야말로 우리의 행복에 매우 중요하고 의미 있는 것임을 강조한다. 그의 방대한 저서들이 견지하는 논지의 대부분은 행복, 즉 인간에게 가능한 가장 큰 행복은 이성의 삶을 추구할 때 달성된다는 것이다. 산타야나는 이처럼 행복을 얻기 위해 시도할 때마다 이성이 매우 중요하다는 논지를 한 번도 포기한 적이 없다. 나아가 이러한 행복을 추구하기 위한 다양한 방식들 중에서 우리는 이성적 구현을 통한 예술 속에서 가장 구체적이며 고양된 행복에 도달할 수 있게 되며, 행복을 형성하는 것은 바로 미적 쾌임을 강조한다. 무엇보다도 이러한 미적 쾌를 통해서 이성적으로 구현된 예술이 우리의 행복에 직접적인 기여를 한다는 것이다. 본 고에서는 산타야나가 언급하고 있는 이러한 예술이 오늘날 어떻게 다양한 영역 속에서 각각의 탁월성을 발휘하고 있는지 고찰하고 있다. 구체적으로 훈련(exercise)과 자동적인 자기표현에 기초한 예술이 어떻게 음악, 스피치, 시, 조형적 구성 등으로 발전해 왔으며, 그 예술적 탁월성의 토대는 무엇인지 살펴보고, 이러한 예술적 탁월성이 각 영역에서 바람직하게 발현될 때 우리 삶 속에서의 다양한 긍정적 요소는 무엇인지 논의하고 있다. 요컨대, 산타야나는 순수 예술이란 우리의 행복을 위한 미적 쾌가 기반이 된 이성적 구현으로서만 그것의 온전한 자격을 부여받게 됨을 강조한다.
In his development of aesthetics, George Santayana emphasizes that the value of art is most important and significant in the happiness of human beings. In Santayana’s many books, he always stresses the discussion of happiness in human beings. Specifically, he argues that a person’s greatest happiness is achieved when they pursue a life of reason. As such, Santayana never gave up his position that reason is the most important element when attempting to achieve happiness. Furthermore, out of the various methods of pursuing happiness, human beings can attain the most complete and elevated happiness in art through rational embodiment. In addition, Santayana emphasizes that aesthetic pleasure is what makes up happiness, out of which art rationally embodied through this aesthetic pleasure directly contributes to our happiness. This study focuses on how art, in the meaning used by Santayana, demonstrates excellence in various areas. In particular, the study identifies how art based on exercise and automatic self-expression has developed into music, speech, poetry, and plastic construction, which is the foundation of artistic excellence, and discusses the various positive factors in our lives when artistic excellence is expressed and demonstrated in each area. In short, fine art only gains its true value when has been rationally embodied based on the aesthetic pleasure aimed at attaing happiness.
