본 연구는 빈곤의 조절효과를 중심으로 하여 부모의 방임이 자녀의 발달 및 문제행동에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 연구대상자는 한국복지패널 1차 자료에서 초등학교 4~6학년 711명을 선정하였고 빈곤의 조절효과를 분석하 기 위해 위계적 회귀분석과 단순기울기(simple slope) 검증법을 함께 사용하 였다. 연구대상자의 인구사회학적 변수로는 성별, 연령, 또래관계, 부모의 교육수준과 연령, 가구형태, 가구원수가 포함되었다. 연구대상자 중 균등화 소득 60% 이상의 일반가정에 속한 아동이 476명(66.9%), 그 외의 빈곤가정 에 속한 아동이 235명(33.1%)이었다. 연구결과, 자녀의 학교성적, 우울 및 불 안정도, 위축정도, 비행정도, 공격성 영역에서는 빈곤의 조절효과가 관찰되 지 않았지만 자녀의 자아존중감, 주의집중 정도에서는 빈곤의 조절효과가 관 찰되었다. 이러한 연구결과를 토대로, 다차원적인 개념을 포함하는 빈곤이 아동에게 미치는 영향에 대한 후속연구를 제안하였으며, 아동학대 뿐만이 아 니라 아동방임에 대한 좀 더 명확한 척도의 개발이 필요함을 제시하였다.


This study examines the effects of parental neglect on children’s development and behavioral problem focusing on moderating effect of poverty. Research subjects are 711 elementary students from 4th grade to 6th grade, who are selected from Korean Welfare Panel Study. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, independent sample t-test, and hierarchical regression were employed to verify relationship between parental neglect, poverty, children’s development and behavioral problem. Also, simple slope test was conducted to assess moderating effect of poverty. Participant’s socio-demographic variables includes gender, age, peer relation, parents’ academic background and age, household types and family size. Children of normal(not poor) households are 476 cases(66.9%) and children of poor households are 235 cases(33.1%). All subjects are in school grade from 4th to 6th. The results of the study are as follows: First, the gaps between the participants who belongs normal households and who belongs poor households were not shown except on academic achievements area. Second, higher level of parental neglect decreases children’s development and increases behavioral problem. Third, the influence of poverty on children’s development and behavioral problem was statistically insignificant. Fourth, poverty moderates the relationship between parental neglect and children’s attention concentration as well as parental neglect and children’s self-esteem. Based on these findings, the implications were discussed. Further studies should be discussed including variety meanings of poverty. Also, decent measurement scale of parental neglect should be developed as well as parental abuse. Finally, qualitative research should be studied for both parents and children.
