문학치료학에서는 치료가 서사를 구성하고 운용하는 능력, 즉 ‘서사능력’과 긴밀하게 관련된다고 보고 있다. 본 연구에서는 서사에 대한 기본적인 관점이 유사한 리쾨르의 서사이론과의 비교를 통해 문학치료학에서 말하는 서사능력이 무엇인지 밝히고자 하였다. 문학치료학에서 서사능력은 서사에 접속하는 능력과 밀접한 관련이 있다. 서사접속능력이란 표면적으로 주어지는 몇 가지 단서들을 통해 의미맥락을 구성하고 이해하는 과정에 관여하는 능력이다. 따라서 서사접속능력은 서사를 구성하는 능력이라 할 수 있다. 또한 문학치료학에서 말하는 서사 구성이란 문학교육에서 서사 표현능력 및 서사 이해와 재창작으로 구분한 범주들의 심층에서 작동되는 메커니즘과 같은 것이라 볼 수 있다. 이러한 서사 구성의 기능은 리쾨르의 ‘플롯 구성하기’ 개념과 유사하다. 또한 리쾨르의 서술적 정체성은 텍스트를 접하며 자신을 확인하고 거듭 바꿀 수 있는 기회가 수시로 열린다는 것을 지지한다. 텍스트에 대한 이해의 변화는 서술적 정체성의 변화로 연결되고 다시 삶과 행동에 영향을 미치게 되는 것이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 서술적 정체성의 양상을 살피기 위해 <내 복에 산다>라는 설화의 서사를 구성하는 다양한 사례를 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 서사 구성의 양상은 서사를 무화시키는 양상, 서사에 반대되는 양상, 서사의 흐름을 따라가는 양상으로 나타났다. 문학치료학적 관점에서는 이 가운데 <내복에 산다>가 가진 서사의 흐름을 따라가도록 구성하는 것이 텍스트의 서사에 잘 접속한 것으로 판단한다. <내복에 산다>의 서사를 잘 이해하지 못했거나 거부하려는 왜곡 없이 그 의미맥락을 온전히 이해한 반응이라고 볼 수 있다. 서사능력이 잘 발휘된다는 것은 텍스트의 서사를 구성하며 자신의 서술적 정체성을 확인하고, 그 과정을 통해 자기서사를 반성적으로 성찰할 수 있는 거리를 확보한다는 것을 의미하기 때문이다.
From a literary therapeutic point of view, therapy is closely related to the Epic ability. The purpose of this study is to clarify the definition of “epic ability” in literary therapy with reference to Paul Ricoeur’s epic theory which has a similar basic perspective on epic. In literary therapy, epic ability is closely related to “connection ability” which is the ability to engage in the process of constructing and understanding semantic context through superficial clues. In other words, connection ability is “the ability to compose epic.” In addition, epic composition in literary therapy is a mechanism that works in the depths of epic expression, epic understanding and re-creation in literary education. The function of epic composition is similar to that of Paul Ricoeur’s concept of “emplotment.” Ricoeur's concept of l'identité or “narrative identity” also supports the opportunity to identify and change the self through access to texts. Self-Interpretation of a text could lead to a change of epic identity; in turn, it can affect one’s life and behaviors. This study investigated various cases from the epic of My Own Fortune from the aspect of epic identity. The results revealed that epic identity is composed by “separation,” “opposition,” and “conformity.” From the literary therapeutic point of view, a good connection ability appears as the aspect of “conformity,” and it confirms epic identity by constructing epic. Further, this process provides an opportunity for introspection, in other words, constructing an epic of the self from a distance.
