이 연구는 제주4‧3시의 현실대응 양상을 살펴보기 위한 것이다. 제주4‧3문학은 지연된 문학으로서 증언문학의 특성을 보여주는데, 4‧3시 또한 마찬가지라고 할 수 있다. 이 글에서는 제주43.시의 현실대응 양상을 4‧3 재현의 양상과 4‧3의 의미 탐색의 양상이라는 두 부분으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 제주4‧3을 시적으로 재현하고 있는 시는 4‧3 당시를 재현하고 있는 시들과 4‧3 이후의 현실을 재현하고 있는 시들로 나누어 볼 수 있었다. 4‧3 당시를 재현하고 있는 시들은 4‧3의 역사적 진실을 가감 없이 재현하기 위해 문학적 형상화를 최소화하는 모습도 보여주었지만, 다양한 시 형식의 활용을 통해 시적 재현의 단조로움과 충격 효과를 일부 완화하는 모습도 보여주었다. 그리고 4‧3 이후의 현실을 재현하고 있는 시들은 4‧3 이후 제주사람들의 비극적인 삶의 모습을 시적으로 잘 재현해주고 있었을 뿐 아니라, 그것을 통해 4‧3이 현재진행형의 사건이자 어떤 형식으로든 해결이 필요한 문제라는 점을 환기해주고 있었다. 4‧3의 의미를 탐색하고 있는 4‧3시도 그것의 역사적 의미를 탐색하는 시들과 현재적이고 미래적인 의미를 탐색하는 시들로 나누어 볼 수 있었다. 회고적이고 역사적인 관점에서 4‧3의 의미를 탐색하고 있는 시들은 4‧3 이전, 즉 분단 이전 상태로의 회복을 강조하고 있었다. 그것은 4‧3 이전의 상태를 회복하는 것이 곧 4‧3 항쟁의 정신을 구현하는 것이라고 보고 있기 때문이다. 그리고 한편으로 그것을 가능하게 하는 섬사람들의 공동체적 연대를 강조하는 시도 주목할 만했다. 4‧3의 현재적이고 미래적인 의미를 탐색하는 시들은 주로 평화와 연대의 가치를 강조하고 있었다. 이 시들은 4‧3이 회고적이고 역사적인 맥락에서만 의미를 가지는 것이 아니라 현재적이고 미래적인 맥락에서도 중요한 의미를 가질 수 있다는 점을 잘 보여주었다. 특히 제노사이드의 경험을 공유하고 있는 국내외 다른 지역과의 연대를 시적으로 형상화하고 있는 시들은 평화라는 보편적 가치의 소중함을 효과적으로 일깨워주고 있었다.

This paper intends to consider aspects of response to reality in Jeju4‧3 poetry. Jeju4‧3 literature has a feature as testimony literature, because it was delayed literature. And Jeju4‧3 poetry has same features. In this paper, it was examined in two parts. One was aspects of it’s representation, the other was aspects of it’s meaning. The poems that represented Jeju4‧3 could be divided in two patterns. The poems that represented situations in those days minimized literary figurations for historical truth. But they effectively avoided simplicity of poetic representation and allergy of realistic description by making diverse poetic style as folk song, shaman song and so on. And the poems that represented situations in later days pay attention to tragical life of Jeju residents. Those awaken the reason why Jeju4‧3 is present progressive event and still a problem that needs to be solved. The poems that examined meanings of Jeju4‧3 also could be divided in two patterns. The poems that search for historical meanings of 4‧3 emphasize recovery of unity of Korea. Because uprising sprit of 4‧3 could be realized through it. On the other hand, some poems that make a point of community solidarity of Jeju residents should pay attention. The poems that search for present and future meanings of 4‧3 emphasize peace and solidarity. Especially, some poems that describes of solidarity between Jeju and different areas where shared genocide effectively remind people of how important the peace.
