서양인들이 동양의 역사와 문화와 사상을 보고 해석하는 서양중심적 지배담론이 ‘오리엔탈리즘’이다. 이 오리엔탈리즘을 우리 동양인들이 무비판적으로 수용하고 확대하고 내면화함에 따라 우리는 우리 자신의 시선, 동양의 정신을 망각하고 있다. 본고에서는 우리가 놓지 말았어야 할 동양의 정신은 과연 무엇인지, 서양은 동양의 정신, 동양의 시선을 탈취하기 위해 어떤 전략을 펴왔는지, 오리엔탈리즘은 왜 끝없이 확산되고 우리는 오늘날까지도 그 덫을 피하지 못하고 있는지를 밝혀보았다. 우선 서양이 제국주의적 확산을 위해 기독교를 전파하면서 동양의 종교인 유교와 불교를 어떤 식으로 해석하였는지를 살펴보았다. 그들은 유교나 불교의 종교적·형이상학적 측면을 배제하면서 상식적·도덕적 수준의 가르침으로 읽어내려 하고, 따라서 공맹이나 석가의 교설 중 종교적·형이상학적 측면을 더욱 강조한 성리학이나 대승불교를 원시유학이나 초기불교의 왜곡이나 변형으로 간주한다. 이에 반해 본고에서는 대승의 여래장 내지 일심사상은 초기불교 무아사상의 완성이라는 것, 성리학이 밝히는, 태극의 리(理)에 입각한 인간의 본연지성은 공맹이 논한 인간의 선한 본성의 형이상학적·종교적 심화라는 것을 밝혔다. 이로써 대승불교 또는 성리학을 국교로 삼았던 우리나라 전통 철학과 종교의 위상을 바르게 정립하고자 하며, 서양화되는 과정 속에서 우리가 쉽게 간과하는 ‘동양적인 것’이 과연 무엇인지, 그 동양적인 것에 기반한 우리의 시선은 어떤 것인지를 밝혀보았다.
'Orientalism' is the Western-centered discourse that Westerners see and interpret the East's history and culture. As this orientalism is uncritically accepted, expanded and internalized by our Asians, we are forgetting our own viewpoint, the spirit of the East. In this paper I discussed, what kind of oriental spirit we should not have let go, what strategy the West has taken to seize the oriental spirit, why orientalism spreads endlessly, and how we are still trapped in that trap today. First, I examined how the West interpreted Neo-confucianism and Mahāyāna, the Eastern religions, while spreading Christianity for expansion of Imperialism. They exclude the religious and metaphysical aspects of Neo-confucianism and Mahāyāna, interpret them as a common sense or a moral theory, and regard them as distortion or deformation of Original-confucianism or Early-buddhism. On the other hand I argued that Tathāgatagarbha or One-mind in Mahāyāna is the completions of Early-buddhism's Non-Ego thought and that Lee(理) or Taegeug(太極) is the deepening thought of Early-confucanism. In this way, I tried to establish the status of Korean traditional philosophy and religion that accepted Mahāyāna and Neo-Confucianism as the state religion, and tried to point out our sprit and viewpoint, which is easily overlooked in the process of Westernization.
