본 연구는 아프리카 사회에서 아프리카인들이 매일 직면하는 생명과 죽음에 관계된 문제들에 대해, 아프리카에 있는 종교들-아프리카 전통종교(African Traditional Religion: 이하 ATR), 기독교, 아프리카 독립교회(Afrcian Independent Churches: 이하 AICs), 이슬람교 등-이 어떤 윤리적 가치위에서 행동양식을 결정하는지에 대한 연구이며, 이를 통하여 아프리카 사회에 대한 이해를 높이고, 선교의 현장에서 아프리카인들과 보다 깊은 동일화(Identification)를 향한 토대를 구축하기 위함이다. 특별히 생명의 가치들이 소홀히 여겨지고 있는 지구화시대의 사회변화 과정 속에서, 아프리카인들의 윤리적 가치들을 형성하고 확대하는 종교들을 심도 있게 고찰해 봄으로써, 현재의 아프리카 사회를 가늠하고자 시도한 연구이다. 우리가 이미 알듯이, 아프리카 사회는 종교적 영역에 있어서 매우 다원화된 사회이다. 특히 오늘날에 있어서 아프리카 사회는 도덕적, 윤리적 판단을 요하는 어떤 문제들에 대해 때로는 서로 대립되고 상반되는 가치들을 담고 있는 다양한 종교들이 서로 영향을 주고받고 있다. 특히 아프리카 전통종교에 담겨있는 가치에 대한 외부종교들-예를 들면 기독교, 이슬람 등과 같은-의 영향으로 인하여, 매우 복잡하고 혼재된 형태의 혼합주의적인 모습을 보인다. 그리고 이러한 혼합주의는 윤리적 판단과 결정을 내리는데 있어서 양립할 수 없는 가치나 교리들이 큰 충돌 없이 자연스럽게 그들의 삶에 스며들고 있다. 이는 곧 아프리카의 전통적인 가치들, 믿음, 윤리적 차원의 종교적 행위들은, 세속적 가치들과 더불어 다른 외부의 종교들이 가지고 있는 가치들과 혼합되는 변화를 겪고 있으며, 이러한 변화들은 삶의 전 영역에서 윤리 도덕적 행위의 근간으로 새롭게 자리를 잡아가고 있다. 아울러 아프리카 사회에서 종교는 사람들로 하여금 공동체와의 강한 결속력을 갖게 하고, 공동체를 통하여 개인의 정체성을 확인하고 누리도록 하는 가장 강한 요소이다. 즉 개인의 생명과 죽음에 관한 윤리 도덕적 결정과 판단도 공동체의 번영과 안녕에 복무하도록 초점을 두고 있는 사회라는 이해는 선교현장에서 그들과의 보다 더 깊은 동일화(Identification)을 향하도록 이끌 것이다
Africa is a religiously plural society and there is constant contact and interaction between people of different religions with diverse value systems. Africa is going through a transitional period; the old order is dying and the new one is struggling to be born. Africa is experiencing a process of value re-orientation as a result of the encounter between indigenous and foreign values, including ethical ones. In this process, the need for a clear moral system is imperative because the quality of any society is bound to disintegrate. In addition, a person interacts with a variety of people and social interaction involves making judgements, about the character and actions of the people lives, guided by the morals of the society. One does not arrive at a right moral decision or judgement automatically, as there are no ready made answers to moral problems nor one correct way of doing something in a given situation. Under normal circumstances, one thinks about the problem and then decides. In this process, They are guided by the moral value systems of the society. This means that Knowledge of these values is important in order to avoid acting or judging in ignorance. It is important that one makes reasonable effort to inform oneself, not only of the moral values, but also of ethical guides and theories in order to make informed moral decisions and judgements.
