유아세례는 기독교 신앙을 가진 부모가 자신의 자녀를 기독교적인 양육책임과 헌신을 받아들여 예식을 통하여 교회공동체 안에서 공적으로 교회의 구성원이 되는 인생 주기적 사건이다. 그러기에, 유아세례 예식은 해당부모의 신앙을 확인 하고, 기독부모로서의 책임을 인식케 하며, 유아세례 예식이후에도 평생토록 신앙적 부모로서 합당한 양육을 할 수 있도록 교육하는 부모교육과정은 매우 중요하 다. 그러나, 오늘날 한국교회 유아세례 부모교육에 관한 연구들은 많은 한국교회 안에서 시행되는 유아세례 부모교육의 현장은 공동체적이기 보다는 개인적이며, 전인격적이기 보다는 교리 중심적이며, 가정과 교회가 연계하여 강력히 신앙을 전수하기보다는 교회의존적인 모습이 발견되어짐을 지적하고 있다. 본 연구는 부모를 가정의 신앙양육의 주체자이해하고 교회는 이를 위한 역량 구비의 우선적 기관이 되어야 함을 주장하는 티모시 폴 존스의 가정구비모델(family equipping model)을 기반으로 한 대안적인 유아세례 부모교육에 대한 교육과 정을 제시하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 먼저는 저자가 속한 교단인 한국장로교회(예 장통합)안에서 시행되고 있는 유아세례 및 부모교육과 관련된 예전적, 교육적 문헌들을 비판적으로 분석하고, 이에 대한 대안적 접근으로 존스의 가정구비모델의 핵심내용과 교육목회적 함의점을 정리하며, 이를 기반으로 한 한국장로교회 유아 세례 부모교육에 대한 새로운 패러다임을 교육목적, 교육내용, 교육방법, 교육환경 등을 포함하여 교육목회적 관점에서 통전적으로 제시하여 보고자 한다. 본 연구를 통하여 제시되어지는 가정구비이론을 기반으로 하는 유아세례 부모교육은 역량 구비적이고, 부모와 회중 참여적이며, 교회와 가정간의 유기적이고 장기적인 목회연계 교육과정을 제시한다.
Infant baptism is a Christian rite of passage in which child becomes a member of the Church publicly in worship service through the confession and commitment of his or her Christian parents for taking responsibility to raise their child in the faith. Thus, it is very important for parent education of infant baptism to help Christian parents to confirm their own faith, to recognize the responsibility as spiritual leaders at home, and to nurture the child in the faith even after the baptism ceremony. However, the recent studies of infant baptism in Korea points that parent education of infant baptism in many Korean churches is inclined to be individual rather than communal, doctrinal rather holistic, and churchdependent rather reciprocal between church and family. This study is undertaken to design an alternative curriculum for the parent education of infant baptism in the Presbyterian Church based on Timothy Paul Jones’ family-equipping model by analyzing official literature regarding infant baptism and parent education critically and by finding educational implications through identifying the main concepts and thoughts on Jones’ theory. With attention to the organic and cooperative relationship between church and family in terms of generational discipleship, this study suggests a curriculum for the parent education of the infant baptism based on family-equipping model to help parents to be equipped as initiative disciple-makers, congregation to be a participant nurturing community, and the rite of infant baptism to be an on-going life journey within the educational ministry of the church.
