불교에서는 모든 차원의 비폭력을 뜻하는 말로 아힘사가 쓰이고 있으며, 불교적인 평화의 가르침으로 널리 사용되었으나 모든 경우에 아힘사가 적용된다고는 볼 수 없다. 특히 현대사회는 과거의 재래식 전쟁에서 평화를 추구하는 것이 아니라 중생들의 삶 모든 면에서 전쟁을 볼 수 있으며 매순간 평화가 깨지며 전쟁으로 돌입하는 양상을 띠게 된다. 전쟁이란 한쪽이 추구하는 욕망이 다른 쪽의 욕망과 충돌하는 데에서 발생한다. 그리고 한쪽은 다른 쪽의 존재를 부정하고 자기 쪽으로 상대를 끌어들이려 한다. 여기에서 전쟁을 비롯한 온갖 투쟁이 발생하여 중생들의 심리적 불안과 전쟁상태를 야기하는 것이다. 이에 대해 『유마경』에서 설하는 불이사상은 일방적인 한쪽의 자비이거나 포기를 통하는 것이 아니라 기본적으로 대립하는 양자의 해체를 통해 평화를 구현하고자 한다. 대립하는 둘의 자기해체, 즉 공성을 구현하는 것에 의해 양자는 평등성으로 회복할 수 있으며, 나아가 양자 모두의 텅 빔은 역설적으로 양자 모두가 절대긍정으로 돌아옴을 의미하기도 한다. 자기부정에 의해 상호간의 대립이 사라진 자리에 각자 새로운 존재로 회복되는 절대긍정의 관점으로 상구보리 하화중생의 보살행을 실천한다면, 경제ㆍ무역 등 전방위로 전개되고 있는 현대와 미래의 대치상황을 해결해 갈 수 있는 희망의 빛줄기를 비출 수 있으며 궁극의 평화와 안심으로 연결될 수 있다고 본다.
Ahimsā is used to mean nonviolence on all levels and is widely used as a teaching of Buddhist peace. However, it is my view that ahimsa can not be regarded as applied in all cases. In particular, modern society can not see peace through past conventional wars but wars in all aspects of life. At the same time, every moment, peace breaks down and comes into the form of going into war. Indeed, in every way modern people are in a state of war. War is caused by a conflict of one's desires with another's desires. And the one denies the other's existence and tries to attract it to his side. In this regard, the idea that all beings are one in the Vimalakirti Buddhist elder does not mean biased toward one side. This is not a way of one-sided mercy or giving up, but an implementation through self-deconstruction between two opposing bases. Both can be restored to equality by implementing self-dissolution or realizing the property of emptiness between opposing beings. The emptiness of both parties paradoxically means that the opponent, who is the target of both parties, returns to the affirmative. When all the other parties are accommodated in a full state, the two parties can establish a new relationship with the other party, where the opposition has vanished due to self-denial. Through this, it can be established that each is restored to a new being.
