본 논문은 대한불교조계종의 표준 우리말 의례가 보급화 되는 현 시점에서 기존 한문과 한글 의례문의 선율 비교 분석을 통해 한글화 원칙에 따른 운곡 실행의 방향성 및 불교계의 대응 방안을 가늠해보고자 한다. 탈종교화 시대에 따른 현대 사회의 흐름은 불교의식의 올바른 의미와 실천적 태도에 관한 중요성을 야기하였으며 점차 일상 속 생활불교의 가치가 높아짐에 따라 한글 의례문 보급화에 대한 계기를 마련하였다. 현재 조계종 표준의례로 정식 공포된 한글 반야심경과 칠정례, 천수경 등은 각 사찰의 예불과 여러 불교 행사에 두루 사용되고 있으며 최근 아미타경과 무상게, 법성게 등의 한글화 법안 통과도 추진되고 있다. 그러나 한문 독송의 오랜 관습으로 인한 상용화의 한계성은 여전히 존재하고 있으며 한편에서는 우리말 경전과 의식문의 수월해진 접근성을 바탕으로 대중포교 실현을 위한 통일된 운곡의 중요성이 점차 강조되고 있다. 따라서 한글 의례에 적용될 새로운 운곡에 있어서는 무엇보다도 한글화 원칙에 따른 음악적 기준과 그 올바른 반영여부에 대한 재검토의 필요성이 요구된다. 한글 의례가 지향하는 가사체 형식은 한정되고 비슷한 짜임새의 선율이 반복되는 구조적 한계점으로 인해 자칫 운곡의 획일화를 초래할 우려가 있다. 또한 한글 가사에 맞춰 단순히 충충 읽어 나가는 최근의 추세를 감안해 볼 때 기존의 형식을 새로운 선율에 적극 활용하여 다양한 운곡 개발에 힘쓰려는 자세가 필요하다. 이러한 노력은 대중들에게 익숙한 정서적 공감대를 형성함으로서 새로운 한글의례에 대한 거부감을 최소화하려는 한글화의 원칙에 상응하는 것으로 이를 위한 불교 음악적 차원의 전문적인 연구와 지속적인 관심이 무엇보다 중요하다.

This study intends to figure out directionality of practices of melody and lyrics based on the principle of transformation into Hangul and countermeasures of the Buddhist orders through comparative analysis of melody between the existing Chinese characters and scripture text, in consideration of today’s situation of which the standard Hangul-based scripture text of Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism is disseminated. The trends of the modern-day society based on liberation of religion brought about importance of correct meaning of Buddhist ritual and practical attitude. Besides, the increased values of Buddhism in the middle of our daily life contributed to providing an opportunity of dissemination of Hangul scripture text. At present, the Heart Sutra, Chiljeongrye and Cheonsugyeong, which were officially promulgated as standard scriptures of Jogye Order, are widely used in diverse worship services of the Buddhist temples and Buddhist events. Lately, there is an on-going effort of passage of a bill for transforming of Amitagyeong, Musanggye and Beopseonggye. Nonetheless, there still exists limitation of wide use of such scriptures in Hangul caused by the long-standing tradition of recitation in Chinese characters. On the other hand, the importance of unified melody and lyrics is gradually emphasized for propagation of Buddhism based on easy accessibility of scriptures in Hangul and ritual text. Therefore, new melody and lyrics, which will be applied to Hangul scriptures, will require musical standards based on principle of transformation into Hangul and necessities of review of its correct reflection possibility. There is concern that the Gasa style, aimed by Hangul scripture, can cause standardization of melody and lyrics due to its structural limitation with repetitive melody of restricted and similar arrangement. Moreover, considering today’s trends of simple and fast reading according to Hangul lyrics, it is required to make an effort to develop a variety of melodies and lyrics by actively applying the existing form to new melodies. Such efforts correspond to the principle of transformation into Hangul to minimizing opposition against new Hangul scripture by creating emotional empathy familiar to the public, and it is indispensable to carry out professional research regarding the dimension of Buddhist music and show constant interests in the field.
