제국대학이란 1886년에 공포된 제국대학령에 의해 설립된 고등교육기관이다. 일본 내지(도쿄, 교토, 도호쿠, 규슈, 홋카이도, 오사카, 나고야)와 식민지(경성, 타이페이)에 설립되었다. 제국대학은 부국강병을 위해 필요한 인재 양성, 즉 제국 일본에 적합한 ‘관료 양성’을 위해 설립되었다. 제국대학 영문학은 영국과 미국을 모델로 한 일본의 근대화에 있어서 영미세계를 수용하는데 대단히 중요한 학과였다. 도쿄제국대학 영문학과 출신인 나쓰메 소세키는 첫 작품 『나는 고양이로소이다』에서 문명사회에 대한 비판을 하였다. 하지만 말년의 작품인 『마음』에서는 제국주의의 길로 나아가고 있다. 도쿄제국대학 영문학과에서는 일본 근대를 대표하는 문호이며 국민작가인 나쓰메 소세키를 만드는데 일조했다. 경성제국대학 영문학과 출신인 이효석은 초기작품인 『도시와 유령』에서 사회적 빈곤의 문제를 다루면서 현실비판을 하였다. 하지만 후기 작품인 『메밀 꽃 필 무렵』이 되면 점점 현실성은 사라지고 서정성이 짙은 작품을 쓰게 된다. 결국 이효석은 일제 말기 내선일체의 사상을 다룬 일본어 소설을 창작했고, 마침내 친일의 길을 걸었다. 이효석을 포함한 대부분의 식민지 지식인들은 제국대학에서 설립 목적에 이탈하는 길을 걷지 못했다. 이것이 경성제대 영문학과 식민지 지식인들의 한계였다.
Imperial University is a higher education institution established by the imperial college decree promulgated in 1886. It was established in Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto, Tohoku, Kyushu, Hokkaido, Osaka, Nagoya) and colony (Kyungsung, Taipei). The Imperial University was established to nurture talents needed for the wealthy nation, i.e., to cultivate bureaucrats suitable for Imperial Japan. Imperial University English Literature was a very important department in accepting the Anglo-American world in the modernization of Japan modeled on England and America. Natsume Soseki, a native of Tokyo Imperial University, criticized the civilization society in his first work, "I am a cat." However, in the "heart" of his later years, he is heading toward imperialism. In the Department of English Literature at Tokyo Imperial University, it contributed to the creation of Natsume Soseki, a national writer. Lee Hyo-seok, a native of Kyungsung Imperial University, criticized reality in his early works, "The City and the Ghost," dealing with the problem of social poverty. However, in his late work "buckwheat flowering," the reality gradually disappeared and the work with the lyricism was written. In the end, Lee Hyo - seok created a Japanese novel about the ideology of the last days of Japanese imperialism and finally walked the path of pro - Japanese. Most colonial intellectuals, including Lee Hyo - seok, did not get out of the way at Imperial University. This was the limit of intellectual college intellectuals.
