본고는 토마스 만의 「토니오 크뢰거」와 최인훈의 「하늘의 다리」를 비교하여 두 작품에 나타난 예술가의 정체성 인식과 시민성의 관계에 대해 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 특히 두 작품에서 예술가적 정체성 인식 과정에 주요한 원동력으로 기능하는 여행과 피난의 형식을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 두 작품 모두 예술은 상품 가치의 영역과는 다르다는 낭만주의적 세계관에 기초해 있다. 그러면서도 예술가의 삶과 시민의 삶 사이에서 하나만을 선택할 수는 없는 것이라는 문제를 제기한다. 따라서 그러한 작가적 인식이 시민성/삶에 대한 탐색과 예술성에 대한 고민으로 이어지는 과정을 살펴보는 것은, 두 작가 모두에게 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 특히 최인훈의 경우 한국 현대소설사에서 가장 많이 연구된 작가 중 한 명이지만, 상대적으로 비교문학적 관점에서의 분석은 충분히 이루어지지 않은 측면이 있다. 이에 따라 비교문학적 관점에서의 연구를 통해 새로운 시각을 도출해 낼 수 있는 가능성이 기대된다. 특히 토마스 만의 「토니오 크뢰거」가 지니는 예술가소설로서의 면모는 최인훈의 몇몇 작품들에서 반복적으로 형상화되는 예술가의식의 문제와 상통하고 있다. 두 작품은 모두 성장한 곳을 떠나 가족과 분리되고 유년의 삶에서 벗어나 예술가의 길로 들어서는 인물을 그린다. 삶의 목적을 찾는 과정에서 예술가의 정체성 찾기가 매우 중요한 것은 두 작품의 공통점이다. 특히 「하늘의 다리」에서는 현실에서 예술적 성취를 이루지 못하고 예술에 대한 욕망이 극대화된 김준구의 모습을 통해 예술가됨의 의미를 더욱 강조한다. 본고에서는 두 작품의 예술가의 정체성 인식 문제에 결정적인 계기로 기능하는 여행과 피난의 형식이 각각 어떠한 의미를 지니는지 구체적으로 살피고, 이에 대한 비교를 통해 최인훈 소설의 또 다른 독법을 찾아보고자 하였다.
This article examines artists’ perception of self-identity and their relationship with civil quality by comparing Tonio Kröger by Thomas Mann and A leg of sky by Choi In-hun. In particular, it focuses on the style of travel and escape that serves as a main impetus in the process of developing artistic identity. Both novels are based on a romanticist outlook on the world that art is outside the realm of value of commodities. Both writers raise an issue that one cannot make an exclusive choice between living as artist and living as an ordinary person. Thus, examining a process whereby a writer’s perception evolves into exploration of civil quality and life, and also concerns over artistic quality is important to both writers. Choi In-hun is among the most extensively researched writers in the history of modern Korean novels, and yet, little analysis has been done from a viewpoint of comparative literature. For this reason, a research from such viewpoint might lead to new insights. Qualities of Tonio Kröger as an artist novel resonate with self-perception of artist that is repeatedly projected in several novels by Choi In-hun. Both novels feature characters who leave their hometown and family behind, break away from childhood, and strike on a path to becoming artists. And in both novels, finding an identity as artist is critical to finding the purpose of life. In A leg of sky, the meaning of becoming an artist is emphasized in portraying Kim Jun-gu who fails to make artistic accomplishments in reality and whose desire for art is maximized. This article analyzes the style of travel and escape that provides a key opportunity for developing the characters’ perception of self-identity as artists in both novels.
