조선불교청년회의 지회활동은 일제시대 한국불교 청년운동을 이해하는데 매우 중요한 주제이다. 한국불교 청년운동에 있어 중앙과 지방의 연계활동을 구체적으로 조명할 수 있기 때문이다. 1920년 6월 20일 창립된 조선불교청년회는 조직을 전국적으로 확대하였다. 청년회의 창립이념에 동조하는 사찰과 지방에서 활동하던 불교청년들에게 지회 가입을 권유하였다. 일제시대 발간된 신문을 토대로 지회 설립을 살펴보면 전국적으로 41곳에 이르고 있다. 그 가운데 1920년과 1921년에 8곳씩 16곳이 결성되어 가장 많은 숫자를 기록하고 있다. 이어 1922년에 6곳이 결성되어 3년이 안 되는 사이 22곳이 결성되었다. 비율로 보면 53.7%에 해당한다. 그런 현상은 조선불교청년회가 창립된 1920년 6월에서 유신회로 전환하여 활동하던 1922년 무렵 각 지방에서 적극적으로 가입했기 때문이다. 그런 의미에서 초기 지회 결성이 열정적이었다고 할 수 있다. 조선불교청년회 지회의 명칭으로 볼 때 사찰에 소속된 불교청년회가 많았다. 지역을 대표하는 이름으로 불교청년회를 조직하고 참여한 경우도 있었다. 청년들은 물론 유지들이 대거 가입했으며, 지회 발전과 회관건립을 위한 후원금이 답지하였다. 지회가 펼친 중점 활동은 간친회, 강연회, 토론회, 구제활동, 학교와 야학활동, 고아원, 활동사진, 체육, 연극, 음악, 그리고 웅변 등이다. 당시 사회 계몽운동과 관련이 깊은 내용들이 전개된 것을 알 수 있다. 이런 계몽운동이 일제의 감시와 탄압을 받은 것으로 볼 때 지회활동 역시 항일정신이 깃들여 있음을 알 수 있다. 이와 같은 조선불교청년회 지회활동을 통해 지방에서 일어난 한국불교 청년운동의 전모를 파악하는 일은 일제시대 불교청년운동과 항일운동에 대한 지평을 확대하는 작업이라는 점에서 그 의의가 크다.
