Most people want to be happy. Recently, the new words “work-life balance” and “small but certain- happiness” have become popular as the trend of focusing on individual life and more on one's own happiness has been rising in Korea. Recent years have seen growth in consumer research on the causes and correlates of happiness. Researchers have also begun to examine the relationship between consumption and happiness. Some researchers suggest that the more people aspire to materialistic goals, the less satisfied they are with life, and the more at risk they are for developing psychological disorders. The fact that thinking about experiences places people in happier than thinking about material possessions provides further evidence that people’s endorsement of their experiences is not entirely due to socially desirable responding. Previous studies on consumers' happiness have been actively conducted, but the research on the relationship between impulsive experience consumption and happiness has been less interested. This study dealt with an issue of whether a variety of experience consumption activities may improve people's happiness levels. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to empirically verify the effect of impulsive experience consumption on happiness by expecting that stress relief and guilt will be mediated. In addition, we examined happiness in impulsive experience consumption is reduced over time. A survey was conducted using a sample of 322 people from demographically diverse groups. The data were analyzed in order to identify the effects of variables adopted in this study. For overall consumption activities, impulsive experience consumption activities improved happiness in life with mediation of stress relief and guilt. The results of this study are as follows. First, impulsive experience consumption has a significant effect on stress relief and guilt. Consumers could experience guilt while relieving stress because experience consumption is achieved on an impulse. Second, the stress relief and guilt caused by impulsive experience consumption has a significant effect on happiness, and this happiness has a positive effect on the re-experience intent. Third, a significant difference in the level of happiness over time was found after an impulsive consumption experience. That is, consumers tend to be relatively happy at early time right after impulsive experience consumption, but ultimately happiness will decrease away from the time of impulsive buying. Understanding impulsive experience consumption issue is essential and something that firms should be integrating into marketing activities, as well as communication activities. Marketing managers have to understand the explicit and implicit experience goals they are making to customers.
