<김희경전>은 조선후기에 쓰인 것으로 추정되는 여성영웅소설로 여타 여성영웅소설처럼 여화위남(女化爲男) 모티프가 등장한다. 여주인공의 남장은 당시 여성에게 제한되었던 공적 영역에서의 활동을 가능하게 하는 장치로 작용하기에 빠질 수 없는 화소이다. 그러나 설빙의 남장은 다른 여성영웅소설과 차이를 보인다. 일반적으로 여성영웅들은 남성적 기질을 타고나, 스스로 남장한다. 반면, 설빙은전형적인 당대 여성적 인물로 묘사되며, 상황에 의해 어쩔 수 없이 남장한다. 또한 남장 이후에도 여성성을 유지하며, 남장으로 세상을 속이는 것에 죄책감을 느낀다. 이러한 설빙의 의식은 병서와 검을 얻게 되면서 차츰 변화한다. 무예를 연마하는 자신의 행동을 스스로 합리화하며, 죄책감에서 벗어나고자 한다. 설빙의심적 변화는 당대 규범에 얽매여 있던 한 여성의 의식이 점차 성장하고 있음을 의미한다. 이후 전쟁에 참여함과 동시에 그동안 보인 설빙의 갈등과 고뇌는 사라지고 영웅으로서의 모습이 부각된다. 설빙의 완벽한 남성화는 여성으로의 회귀 과정에서 더욱 뚜렷하게 드러난다. 자신의 정체를 숨기고 남성으로 살아오던 설빙은여성으로 회귀하게 된 상황에서 고뇌한다. 설빙의 고뇌는 남성으로 살아오면서 인식하게 된 당대 불합리한 남녀차별에서 비롯된다. 당시 가부장제 중심의 이데올로기로 인해 여성보다 우위에 있던 남성을 몸소 체험하게 되면서 남성으로의 삶을유지하고자 욕망하게 된 것이다. 여성 영웅으로의 활약 이후 설빙은, 당대 이데올로기에 길들여져 이를 무비판적으로 수용하던 예전 모습이 아닌, 당대 불합리한남녀 차별을 인식하고, 자신의 삶을 주체적으로 살고자 번뇌하는 적극적인 인물로변모한다. 따라서 여성으로 회귀 과정에서 끊임없이 갈등하며, 고뇌하는 것이다. <김희경전>은 영웅이 되는 과정에서 한 여성의 내면 및 의식이 변화하는 과정을여실히 보여준다. 다른 여성영웅소설들이 외면했던 여성 주인공의 심리에 주목하여 이를 세밀하게 그려낸다. 이러한 점이 여타 여성영웅소설과 분별되는 <김희경전>만이 갖는 의의라고 하겠다.

‘Kim Hee Kyung Jeon’ was estimated as one of them written in late Joseon. In ‘Kim Hee Kyung Jeon,’ the motive with woman’s being disguised in a man’s dress is appeared like other heroine novels. Male disguising of heroines was the essential motive as the tool to be able to perform in public areas that women were limited at that time. However, Sol Bing’s male disguising was different from the other heroine novels. Most of heroines had inborn manly characters to be disguised in a man’s dress by themselves, while Sol Bing was described as the typical female in the times but to be disguised due to the situation, unavoidably. Also, Sol Bing kept femininity even after disguising and felt guilty and conflict continuously due to cheating others. Her consciousness started to be changed gradually upon getting the book on strategy and a sword. She justified her behaviors to practice marshal arts trying to get out of the guilty. Sol Bing’s change of mentality means the gradual growth of a woman’s consciousness that was tied to the norms of the times. Since then upon participation in the war, her conflict and agony were disappeared, and the features of heroine were highlighted. Sol Bing’s complete virilism was revealed more clearly in the process to return to a woman. Sol Bing who had lived as a man hiding her identity felt conflict and agony in the situation to return to a woman. Sol Bing’s agony was originated from the irrational gender discrimination at that times perceived as she lived as a man. As she experienced a man who was superior to women dur to the patriarchy-oriented ideology at the times, she had the desire to maintain the life as a man. After performing as a heroine, she recognized the unreasonable gender discrimination not with the prior feature to accept this without criticism, and changed into the active character who tried to live her life independently. Hence, she continued to feel conflict and agony during the course to return to a woman. ‘Kim Hee Kyung Jeon’ described the heroine’s mentality more that was avoided in other heroine novels. This point is the unique meaning of ‘Kim Hee Kyung Jeon’ that is differentiated from other heroine novels.
