박진의 번역가의 탄생과 동아시아 세계문학(소명출판, 2019)은 한국문학사에서 주목받지 못했던 번역가들과 그들의 번역 방법론(중역), 그리고 이를 통해 수행됐던 세계문학에 대한 상상과 복수의 동아시아 근대성을 탐구하는 책이다. 이를 위해이 책은 번역가와 번역문학을 감싸고 있는 역사적 조건과 맥락, 그리고 그것들이 발생시킨 효과들을 동아시아라는 시좌에서 살펴본다. 이에 따라 저자는 원본과 사본의위계성에서 벗어나지 못한 기왕의 비교문학과 번역학의 관점들과 절연하고, 원본과사본 간의 접촉과 횡단 그리고 그것들의 파생 결과들을 역사적인 관점에서 파헤친다. 이 같은 문제의식은 한국근대문학과 세계문학에 대한 한국인의 관념을 형성하는 데지대한 향을 미쳤음에도 불구하고 그간 문학사 안에서 주목받지 못했던 번역주체들에 대한 탐구로 연결된다. 홍난파, 이상수, 양재명, 진학문, 김동성, 김억, 임학수, 양건식 등의 생애와 그들이 남긴 번역문학들, 그리고 그들의 번역 방식들이 본문에서 역사적인 관점에서 검토된다. 한편 이들의 번역 방식은 대개 일본을 경유한 중역의 형태를 띠곤 했는데, 저자는 이러한 중역을 선험적인 이분법에 의거해 가치 판단하는 대신, 주체와 타자의 인식들이 다양하게 대립하고 중첩되기도 하는 복잡한 교차로로 인식한다. 이 때문에 중역은 문학사에서 감추고 은폐해야 할 부끄러운 한계가 아니라 다양한 사상들이 만나고 분기되는 이채의 흔적으로 여겨진다. 바로 여기서 동아시아의 시좌 혹은 방법론은 번역(중역)과 관련된 문학적 실천과 수행성을 일본과 중국 그리고 한국으로 확장시켜 준다. 세계문학은 동아시아 국가들 간에 번역이란 실천을 통해 상상됐으며, 역사적 흐름 속에서 연속과 단절의 부침을 드러냈고, 이 때문에 세계문학에 대한 관념과 동아시아 근대성은 복수성을 지니게 됐다.
The Birth of a Translator and East Asian World Literature explores many translators who have not been dealt with significantly in the Korean literary history and their method of translation : the double translation. This study also covers the Western literary imagination, the notion of world literature, and East Asian modernity. The most important point of this book is that it considers translation and the double translation as literary activities. So the double translation in this book means not inferior features of literature in translation in modern Korea but different ways to produce literary effects. So, if you take translation as performativity, the hierarchical order of original/translation, source/copy, and so forth can be questioned. According to this book, the methodology in translation studies and comparative literature studies has supported that order of rank and has evaluated the perfection of translation. While those studies place a priority of authenticity, this book pays attention to performativity. Because of such differences, this study could investigate so many korean translators who has been passed unnoticed : Nanpa Hong, Hakmun Jin, Eok Kim, Geonsik Yang, Haksu Im, Namsun Choi, and so on. They often depended on the double translation from japanese. However that was the unique way how they could produce so many translated works. In addition to that, the notion of world literature could be extended by their translation activities. Consequently, the world literature in the historical context of East Asia has revealed both continuity and discontinuity. So we may call it the plurality of world literature.
