본고는 김현승의 내면적 정서를 이루는 고독의 실체와 그 요인 및 배경을 집중 분석한 다음, 이를 토대로 고독의 절정기인 절대고독 시기 고독의 시적 형상화에 관해 살펴보았다. 나아가 시적 형상화에 역설적 모순어법이 어떻게 기능하는가를 그의 시「절대고독」을 중심으로 고찰했다. 김현승의 고독에 대한 논고는 대부분 절대고독 시기에 집중되고 있었다. 그리고 그의 고독, 이를 주제로 쓴 시에 관해 다양한 논지를 펼치고 있었다. 그러나 정작 고독의 생성 요인과 배경에 대해서는 별 언급이 없었다. 본고는 이 점에 주목해 그의 성격형성기를 기점으로 심리적 시각에서 고독의 요인 및 배경을 살펴보았다. 김현승은 시에서 역설과 모순어법을 활용해 사실과 모순을 배치시켜 긴장을 조성하며 의미를 전경화한다. 그의 시「절대고독」에서도 일반적 오해를 뛰어넘어 다의적 해석을 요구하는 역설적 모순어법이 주조를 이룬다. 그는 고독의 극점에 이르러 새로운 세계를 체험하는데 그 경지는 언어로는 형용하기 어려운 표현상의 한계를 지니고 있었다. 이를 효과적으로 형상화하기 위해 그는 고도의 상징, 은유, 역설적 표현, 모순어법 등을 사용했다. 따라서 절대고독 시기의 정황을 헤아려야 역설적 모순어법의 방법론적 가치에 대해 수긍할 수 있듯이 고독과 긴밀한 상호성을 공유하는 역설적 모순어법을 해독하는 것이 절대고독의 실체를 파악하는데 효과적 일 수 있었다. 외부의 자연이나 사물에 대한 관심에서 부터 출발한 시가 형이상학적 물음으로 내면화된 것이 현대시의 특징 중 하나라면 김현승은 한국 현대시의 선구자에 속한다. 그에게 시는 유한 너머 무한한 신비의 세계와 내면의 형상화를 추구하는 내밀한 수단이기도 했기 때문이다. 김현승은 모더니즘 경향의 시에 형이상학적 성찰을 바탕으로 정신주의적 시의 진수를 이룬다. 여기에서 형이상학적 성찰에 범신론적 무한의 세계에 대한 인식이 어떻게 기능하는가 하는 질문은 다양하고 폭넓은 후속 연구를 주문한다. 주제어 : 김현승·절대고독·역설·모순어법·범신론·주체적 자아
This paper thoroughly examined the true solitude that forms Hyŏn-sŭng Kim’s internal emotion as well as its factors and background and analyzed the poetic imagery of solitude in Absolute Solitude, which is the peak of solitude. Furthermore, the study examined how paradoxical oxymorons function in poetic imagery through his poem “Absolute Solitude.” Most papers on Hyŏn-sŭng Kim’s Solitude have focused on the period of Absolute Solitude and made various arguments on his solitude as well as poems on it, but have barely mentioned the factors and background of solitude formation. By focusing on this fact, the paper probed into the factors and background of solitude in the formative years of his personality from a psychological viewpoint. Using paradox and oxymoron in his poems, Hyŏn-sŭng Kim develops a panorama of meaning by arranging facts and contradictions and creating tension. Paradoxical oxymorons which go beyond general misunderstandings and demand diverse interpretations also form the majority of the narrative of his poem “Absolute Solitude.” Kim experiences a new world when he reaches the peak of solitude, and such stage has limitations that are difficult to be expressed and described in words. To effectively embody this, Kim used advanced symbols, metaphors, paradoxical expression, and oxymoron. As one can agree with the methodological value of paradoxical oxymoron by comprehending the situation of the Absolute Solitude period, interpreting a paradoxical oxymoron which shares close reciprocity with solitude can be effective to discern the truth of Absolute Solitude. If the internalization of poem that started from an interest in external nature or object into meta-physical question is one of the characteristics of present-day poetry, Hyŏn-sŭng Kim is the pioneer of Korean present-day poetry. For Kim, poetry was also an inner means to pursue the infinite, mystery world beyond the finiteness and an internal imagery. Based on a metaphysical introspection on poetry of modernism tendency, Hyŏn-sŭng Kim achieves the essence of ideal, spiritual poetry. A question on how the recognition of a pantheistic, finite world is possible in a metaphysical introspection leads to more various and wider follow-up research.
