본고에서는 엔도 슈사쿠 문학에 나타난 육체의 양상과 그 의미를 순문학에서 유머소설 장르까지 범위를 확대하여 고찰해 보았다. 초기작 『아덴까지』와 『백색인』에서 차별의 시선이 수렴되는 육체는 이성의 폭압에 저항하는 반격의 수단이 되고 있다. 그리고 『유학』에서는 육체가 성이라는 근원적인 측면에서 시공간을 초월하는 소통의 매개가 되는 한편 같은 시공간 안에서 타자를 배제하는 권력의 횡포를 폭로하고 있다. 또한 후기작 『스캔들』에서 육체는 현대사회에서 소외의 대상이 되는 노년을 조명하고 이에 대한 성찰의 기회를 준다. 마지막으로 유머소설에서 육체는 웃음을 유발하는 소재를 제공하고 있는데 여기에서 절대적인 위계질서를 전복하고 타자와의 대화적 소통의 추구라는 의미를 발견할 수 있다. 이와 같이 육체의 문제는 순문학뿐만 아니라 유머소설에 이르기까지 엔도 슈사쿠 문학에서 문제의식의 기저를 이루고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 엔도 슈사쿠 문학에서 육체는 배제와 소외라는 인간 삶의 폭력적 양태를 화합과 소통으로 극복하고자 하는 카니발적 지향점을 제시하고 있다. 이로써 종교문학이라는 한정된 범위를 초월하여 엔도 슈사쿠 문학세계를 입체적이고 다양한 관점으로 파악할 수 있는 하나의 방법이 되고 있는 것이다.
This study looks at how bodies appear in Endo Shusaku’s works ranging broadly from pure literature to humorous novels. In To Aden and White Man, the body encounters discrimination and becomes a counteroffensive against the tyranny of reason. In Ryugaku, the body exposes the tyranny of power to exclude others while also becoming a medium of communication over time and space, and in Scandal, it illuminates old age, which is being excluded from modern society. And the body, which is the subject of laughter in Shusaku’s humor novels, overturns the absolute hierarchy, distracts boundaries, and seeks to communicate with others. In this way, the body is based on a critical mind in Endo Shusaku’s writings from pure literature to humor novels. The body goes beyond the narrow limits of religious literature and becomes a way to see his literary world from various perspectives.
