이 논문은 최근 발굴된 장석영의 일기인 「흑산일록」을 토대로 파리장서운동의 초기과정을 경북 성주라는 지역에 초점을 맞추어 좀 더 풍부하게 정리하는데 목적이 있다. 또한 다음 질문에 대한 답을 찾고자 하였다. 파리장서운동은 왜 경북 성주에서 탄생하였을까? 독립청원운동의 씨앗은 김창숙과 곽종석이 처음 떨어뜨린 것일까, 아니면 그 이전부터 성주에 그런 시도가 있었던 것일까? 우선, 성주의 파리장서운동 참가자를 세 개의 세력, 즉 추진세력, 파리장서 서명자, 협력자로 분류해 수치와 역할 그리고 조선총독부의 탄압 현황을 정리했다. 이어, 19세기 말 이후 경북 성주에 나타난 사회경제적 변화와 학문적 특징을 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 김창숙이 성주에 도착하기 전 성주 유림 사이에 벌어진 독립운동 방식에 관한 논쟁의 내용을 살펴보았다. 성주는 파리장서운동의 최대 거점이었다. 통계상 참가자의 수가 다른 지역을 압도하고, 참가자들이 비중 있는 역할을 맡았으며, 조선총독부로부터 가장 심한 탄압을 받았다는 점이 이를 반증한다. 성주가 파리장서운동의 최대 거점이 된 것은, 조선 말기 이후의 사회경제적 변화를 수긍하고 서양문명에 대한 깊은 탐색을 특징으로 하는 한주학맥의 발상지였기 때문이다. 이런 지적 기반 위에서 김창숙이 파리장서운동을 정식 제안하기 전 성주에서는 이미 독립청원운동에 대한 우호적인 분위기가 형성되어 있었다.
Pari jangseo undong is a Korean independence movement in 1919. It’s an activity to send a long letter to Peace Conference in Paris. So it’s named Pari jangseo undong in Korea. On the petition, 137 Korean confucian literati signed for the independence of Korea, and it’s Seongju the region the biggest number of persons signed on. Why is it so? Is there any special reasons? Most of all, this article focused on the social changes in Seongju because such a result can be the question of not several persons but the locality. And, the article focused on the participants of Seongju what roles they played. We’ll find that the participants of Seongju really played important roles. It will be found though some statistics also. Addition to it, the article researched how serious participants of Seongju were suppressed by Choseon Government-General. So we will know how positive the participants of Seongju were. Last, the article researched if a few persons who were staying in Seoul exclusively possessed the informations on independence petition movement or they already knew it earlier.
