Rewriting history through interconnections between families across borders, Amitav Ghosh’s The Shadow Lines is engaged with an archaeological act of uncovering layers of silence around traumatic sites in personal and national history. While employing storytelling and memory to fill in the gaps in official historical documents, the novel explores spectral presences that haunt the boundaries of a personal identity and national community. While depicting the lead characters’ identities as shadowed by an alterity, it also examines what significance Tridib’s longing for other times and places has in post-partition India. Instead of reconstructing the moment of Tridib’s death in his own words, the narrator lets other characters tell their accounts in their own voices. Tridib’s final act, read by May and the narrator as a sacrifice, still remains a mystery at the end. The mystery of the traumatic moment then invites the reader to keep returning to gaps and silences in the story in search for spectral presences of the past in the form of desires and longings waiting to be fulfilled.
아미타브 고쉬의 「그림자 선」은 서로 다른 시간과 공간의 점을 교차하는 가족들의 얽힌 관계를 통해 과거 역사를 다시 쓰기하면서 개인과가족사의 트라우마를 둘러싼 침묵의 겹을 들춰내고자 하는 화자의 이야기를 그려내고 있다. 이야기하기와 기억을 통해 공식적 역사 기록의 틈을 메우는 작업을 하면서 소설은 개인의 정체성과 국가공동체의 경계에존재하는 보이지 않지만 현존하는 것들을 탐색한다. 등장인물들의 정체성에서 타자성의 그림자를 찾아내는 한편, 소설은 또한 다른 시간과 장소에 대한 트리딥의 갈망이 분단 이후의 인도에서 어떤 의미를 갖는지탐구한다. 화자는 트리딥의 죽음을 자신의 말로 재구성하기보다는 다른인물들이 자신의 목소리로 이야기를 하도록 한다. 메이와 화자가 트리딥의 마지막 행위를 희생으로 읽긴 하지만 화자는 또한 끝내 알 수 없는무엇이 있음을 분명히 한다. 따라서 이 트라우마의 순간은 독자로 하여금 이야기의 틈과 침묵으로 계속해서 돌아가 과거의 보이지 않지만 현존하는, 성취를 기약하는 욕망과 갈망을 읽어내도록 유도한다
