1920년대 초는 외국문학과 서구의 문예사조가 활발히 유입되는 시 기였고, 이 시기에 발표된 상화의 시편들이 이로부터 적잖은 영향을 받았음은 널리 알려진 사실이다. 연구가들이 상화의 초기 시세계를 기술할 때 흔히 상징주의나 낭만주의 또는 데카당스 등의 개념을 사 용하는 것은 이 때문이다. 이런 개념들은 편리하고 불가피한 측면도 없지 않지만, 워낙 그 의미가 넓어 때로 모호성을 감수해야 한다. 상 화의 초기 시를 보들레르나 베를렌느의 작품과 비교하여 보다 구체적 으로 관련성이나 영향관계를 밝히려 한 연구들도 있다. 그러나 많지 않을뿐더러 몇몇 작품만을 대상으로 삼아 본격적인 비교 연구라고 보 기 어렵다. 우리는 죽음의 문제를 중심으로 상화의 초기 시가 보들레르와 어떤 관련성이 있는지 살펴보고자 했다. 두 시인의 유사성과 차이를 심층 적으로 드러내기 위해 보들레르의 경우를 다소 상세하게 검토했다. 주제의식부터 이미지와 언어, 때로 형식에 이르기까지 두 시인의 상 관성은 알려진 것보다 훨씬 깊고 광범위하다. 그에 비하면 베를렌느 와의 상관성은 매우 지엽적이다. 악의 꽃의 시인이 상화의 초기 시 에 미친 영향은 압도적이었고, 이 점은 충분히 지적되지 않은 듯하다. 상징주의니 낭만주의니 하는 거창한 개념을 굳이 사용할 필요가 없 다. 상화의 경우, 외래적 요소는 거의 다 보들레르와 밀접한 관련을 맺고 있기 때문이다. 그는 당대에 누구보다 가까이 「악의 꽃」의 세계 에 다가갔던 시인이고, 이런 만남이 없었다면 「나의 침실로」 같은 작 품도 태어나지 않았을 것이다.
It is well known that at the beginning of the 1920s, European literary trends and movements were widely introduced in Korea and significantly influenced Sanghwa Lee’s early poetry. For this reason, researchers have often used such concepts as Symbolism, Romanticism or Decadence when describing the former’s influence on Lee. These concepts, which have a very broad semantic scope, are convenient and even inevitable, but in return, they are always accompanied by a certain form of ambiguity. There are also comparative studies attempting to clarify the correlation between Lee’s early poems and Charles Baudelaire's or Paul Verlaine's works. But they are neither numerous nor exhaustive enough. This paper attempts to highlight the close relationship between Lee in his early career and Baudelaire, mainly by analyzing the question of death - a fundamental theme explored by both poets. In terms of content, image and language, their correlation is deeper than thought. Compared to Baudelaire, Verlaine is much less present in Lee’s early poems. This study argues that the influence of the author of Flowers of Evil on Lee’s early poems is prominent, and that there is no need to use the concepts of Symbolism or Romanticism to characterize this influence. Almost all the foreign influences found in his early poems came from Baudelaire. Without his reading of Baudelaire, he could not have written such a poem as “Towards My Alcove”.
