What does the term “post-war” mean in Japan? “Post-war” is most commonly used as an adjective that modifies propernouns,suchaspost-warJapan , combining the meaning of “in a period after the war” with Japan-specific circumstances. This indicates that “post-war” has a special meaning in Japan and connotes a variety of context-dependent meanings. The contemporary relationship between Korea and Japan from a historical perspective is contingent upon how Japan established a “post-war” national identity and transformed the term’s meaning. Moreover, national discussions on topics such as constitutional reform and historical presentation have occurred in Japan as the nation strongly recognized “post-war” after its defeat in 1945 and a series of declarations of the end of the war . This indicates that Japan remains under the influence of its defeat and “postwar” identity. Thus, it can be said that the use of “post-war” constitutes a foundation for research on Japan. Against this backdrop, this study aimed to discuss Japan’s perception of “post-war” from a genealogical perspective by focusing on articles on post-war Japan that were published in Sekai (世界) between 1955 and 2015 under the title “○○ years of postwar Japan ,” which demonstrate Japan’s perception of “post-war” from a diachronic perspective.
